Hi,

as said on July 20
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=868398#15),
this package is one of the very few blockers that currently prevent us
from removing the obsolete libgnome2-perl and libgnome2-vfs-perl from
the archive.

Can I proceed and request the removal of this package from
the archive? Or has someone a plan to remove this dependency during
the Buster cycle?

I'm explicitly adding the people who've worked on this package this
most recently into the loop as they might have a plan or opinions.

Context: ideally I would like to sort this out during DebCamp, so
a quick answer would be appreciated. But of course I understand if you
can't react this fast :)

Cheers,

Just tried to remove the depencency without success. shutter cannot
start due to missing Gnome2.pm. Need to check if this can be fix easily
or not. If we cannot fix it, I will say we can request the removal.

Thanks a lot for checking!

This works for me. Note that shutter is also one of the very few
packages blocking the removal of other libgnome2*-perl packages,
so ideally the fix would remove all Gnome2::* dependencies.

What would be an acceptable timeline for you to check before we decide
about the removal? Personally I'm rather flexible: as long as this
happens during the Buster development cycle, I'm happy :)

Let me have a look before deciding to remove shutter.

Give me at least 2 months.

I think this can be done ;-)

Any status update?

FWIW the upstream bug about this issue was created 5 years ago and
never updated since then.

Thanks!

Subject: Precarious status of Shutter in Debian
Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2017 13:30:18 +0200
Hello

Debian is moving away from Gnome2::VFS [1] . This obsolete module will be
removed from next release of Debian.

Unfortunately, shutter, a very nice Gtk2 screenshot application, depends on
Gnome::VFS, which means that shutter will be removed from Debian unless this
dependency is removed from shutter [2].

I guess that the options are:
* port shutter from Gnome2::VFS to GVFS or GIO
* replace Gnome2::VFS with other Perl modules.

Unfortunately, Debian perl team do not have the skills or bandwidth to work on
this port, I hope that someone on this list will be able to help.

Does anyone on this list have better ideas ?

All the best

Considering that:

 - upstream development seems dead
 - Shutter uses GTK+ 2.x, which is the old-stable version of GTK
 - Shutter is also heavily tied to X11 and does not work on Wayland

I'm not entirely sure why you think the whole thing shouldn't be
retired altogether.

Ciao,
 Emmanuele.

Because it simply works nicely? Only because Gtk/Gnome maniacs are
switching to something rather useless, doesn't mean that old software
is becoming useless, too.

They did manage to put out a new point release recently:

http://shutter-project.org/2017/09/after-a-long-time-a-new-bug-fix-release-0-94/

I suspect it needs more work than that though to make it useable in sid -
which is a shame as it's a nice tool.

Nice contribution.

Could you please try to avoid insulting other people in the free
software community, especially when looking to get their help?

Otherwise you should reconsider replying at all.

> are switching to something rather useless,

We clearly have different definitions of "useless".

> doesn't mean that old software
> is becoming useless, too.

Unmaintained software that uses long since deprecated functionality is
not strictly speaking "useless", but it's definitely a source of risk,
especially when running it inside a platform that is still maintained.

Of course, you're absolutely free to keep using old, unmaintained
software; you can either choose never to upgrade the environment in
which it runs, or you get to pick up its maintenance.

Ciao,
 Emmanuele.

wow ... even if i don't buy all the "gnome maniacs" mindshare (which
actually is a very friendly community), i have to admit i'm pissed off
to see those kind of answer, this isn't only rude (Emmanuele just wanted

Well, as mentioned by others, it's a really nice screenshot application. One
of the best looking Perl application, like gcstar or frozen-bubble. It's a
shame that there's no "powered by Perl" somewhere on the UI.

And shutter is still quite popular according to popcon [1].

That said, if it's not popular enough to find a maintainer, we'll have no
choice but to remove it from Debian.

I guess that the next step is to announce the probable demise of shutter on
debian-devel and debian-users in the (slim) hope that someone steps up.

All the best

Dod

PS: I wonder what is shutter's status in other distro ...

Did this happen?

Updates:

 - The GNOME team is now bumping severity on bugs that block the
   removal of libgnome*.

 - shutter transitively depends on libunique that shall go away as
   well (#885811).

Date: Sun, 31 Dec 2017 10:39:25 +0100

Unfortunately, Debian perl team do not have the skills or bandwidth to work on
this port, I hope that someone will be able to help.

If you're interested in taking over maintenance of shutter, please:
- coordinate with upstream shutter team [3] (yes, upstream is on launchpad)
- keep debian-perl team and me posted

All the best

Hi,

(status update on top, specific questions for Jeremy and Dominique at
the bottom)

Jeremy Bicha:
> As announced [1], we do not intend to release Debian 10 "Buster" with

Almost a year has now passed since I've filed this bug report during
DebCamp17. Shutter is now the only blocker that currently prevents us
from removing 7 obsolete lib*-perl packages from the archive, which in
turns blocks removing obsolete GNOME 2 libraries. Since then, calls
for help were sent to the gtk-perl list (9 months ago) and to
debian-{devel,user}@ (6.5 months ago).

My understanding of the upstream situation [1] is:

 - A patch was proposed by Dominique Dumont 4 months ago, that ports
file handling from VFS to GIO. Thanks Dominique!

 - As a follow-up to this patch submission, on March 11 the only
active upstream maintainer of Shutter wrote "I'm not a developer
and in particular I never learnt Pearl and never worked with GTK
libraries", cannot review patches, and proposed to give Dominique
access to the upstream BZR repo so he can fix stuff directly there
(and de facto become the only person active upstream with
development skills). Dominique did not reply to this offer.

 - I'm not aware of any WIP to port Shutter away from its other
lib{gtk,gnome}2-*-perl dependencies (see the list of RC bugs
blocked by this one for details).

[1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/shutter/+bug/1006290

At this point, it looks quite clear that nobody has the skills,
motivation and time to take over Shutter development upstream and port
its codebase to non-obsolete libraries during the Buster development
cycle. shutter and lib*-perl packages were removed from testing a few
months ago and it's unlikely they'll be part of the Buster release.

What I'm now wondering is how long we want to keep them in sid.

With my pkg-perl team member hat on, I'm not very comfortable with
keeping, under the team umbrella, 7 obsolete lib{gtk,gnome}2-*-perl
packages in the archive, themselves depending on libraries that have
been declared unmaintained upstream for years. I'm fine with keeping
them in sid a little longer (say, until the end of 2018) if Dominique
thinks that waiting some more has any chance to bring a new Shutter
version that does not depend on these obsolete libraries. Dominique,
what do you think?

Jeremy, what's the plan wrt. obsolete GNOME libraries in sid?

Cheers,

Hmm, I don't remember seeing this offer. No matter.

Shutter also needs to be ported on the replacement of libgoocanvas-perl.

All in all, I guess that 2 or 3 weeks of full time work are required to port
shutter to more recent libraries. I don't have that kind of free time.

Sadly, I think the only option left is to remove shutter from Debian.

It's a tedious process because it requires removing packages that some
maintainers aren't ready to let go of yet. For instance,
gnome-python's removal is blocked by python-sugar-toolkit.

I'm not actively working on completing the sid removals right now, so
maybe me or someone else will work on it more next year. (I mean it
could happen this year, but the longer the packages are not in
testing, the stronger the argument becomes for removing them from sid
too.)

Thanks,
Jeremy Bicha
