I did a full-upgrade today which upgraded the gdm packages from
version 48.0-3 to 49.1-4.  After rebooting, gdm did not display
anything.  I was still to switch virtual terminals with Ctrl-Alt-F<n>.

Downgrading gdm3, libgdm1, and gir1.2-gdm-1.0 to the version in trixie
(48.0-2) resolved this, so this doesn't seem to be triggered by some
other dependency of gdm.

All I can see in the journal is:

Did you also upgrade packages from the gnome-shell, gnome-session, 
mutter, gjs and gnome-settings-daemon source packages? We might need 
some extra Breaks or versioned Depends to get the whole family to be 
upgraded together or not at all.

I can reproduce this in a VM. It looks like the new gdm3 needs the new 
gnome-session (not yet published in the main archive, but available from 
https://incoming.debian.org/) but does not strictly require the rest of 
this transition.
