Package: fglrx-driver

thanks
I installed fglrx-driver 9-6-3 on x86-64 (by manually building the package from
packages.debian.org package), and I am getting lots of these messages:
[ 982.287980] [fglrx:firegl_find_any_map] *ERROR* Invalid map handle!<3>[fglrx:drm_vm_open] *ERROR* map not found -> inconsistent kernel data!!! vma_start:0x7f2675c6a000,handle:0xd9429000

I am using 2.3.30.1 kernel:
Linux debian 2.6.30.1 #126 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jul 16 12:40:15 EEST 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
This bugreport says this was fixed in 9-6-1, but I am seeing them with 9-6-3.
I don't know if older kernels/drivers have shown this message or not, because I
just bought this ATI card.
Should I attach my kernel .config?
My xorg.conf is pretty minimal:

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
I am seeing the invalid map handle error as well with fglrx-driver
1:9-6-4 and kernel 2.6.30-1-686. When gdm opens I get a system beep.
2D appears to work normally but if I run fglrxinfo I get another system
beep and a complete freeze with no output. This is using an "ATI
Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT." This hardware worked using the 9.3 drivers
directly from AMD.

Using the same fglrx-driver version (1:9-6-4) and same kernel (2.6.30-1)
but amd64 rather than 686 and an "ATI Radeon HD 4890" I also get the
dmesg output for the invalid map handle however fglrxinfo and all other
OpenGL applications work as expected.
For the freeze perhaps the amd64 rather than 686 kernel is a factor or
perhaps the ATI hardware is a factor. Maybe the invalid map handle is
relevant or maybe it is a red herring. Let me know if you have any
suggestions for debugging this further.

No, that will be fixed if the new fglrx supports the up to date kernel :/

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
It seems there are a number of separate issues at work here: First, bug #524871 was originally filed for the "Invalid map handle" message. This message does occur in the case of the freeze when using OpenGL but I don't know if the two problems are related. I find that the "invalid map handle" message is also reported in a different system where the freeze is not happening. Therefore perhaps the freeze issue should be moved to a separate bug report? If the freezing issue is related to the version of the kernel that would suggest that downgrading the kernel would help resolve the issue. Unfortunately I believe downgrading the kernel makes the fglrx-source unable to compile. Are the kernel and fglrx-source dependencies documented or enforced by the packages? What would be a path for a work-around to this issue? Does it make sense to downgrade the kernel and try the fglrx drivers from the ATI installer? If so, do they need patches to get going with the version of Xorg in unstable?

The invalid map handle error is there, but it should just slow down the performance of opengl apps, maybe on some cards/setups it also crashs.. We are only supporting the configuration from the tree, so: we just support etch fglrx with the etch xorg and etch kernel, same for sid and testing, it is not possible to have multiple support for every stage here. > > What would be a path for a work-around to this issue? Do not use the ati installer, if you realy feal annoyed by this issue, downgrade your kernel and the fglrx debian version, but do not frickle it around.

Thanks. Is there any indication that AMD/ATI have accepted this as a bug and that they are working on it? > We are only supporting the configuration from the tree, so: we just > support etch fglrx with the etch xorg and etch kernel, same for sid and > testing, it is not possible to have multiple support for every stage here. Right, I recognize the philosophy here although my experience with fglrx from ATI has been that pinning back a few sid packages to testing or unstable can make things workable. This is relevant in the case where fglrx can not be made compatible with the full set of sid packages. I presume it took some modification to get ATI fglrx release to work with 2.6.30 and I think it is worth considering when it is best to move fglrx forward to the sid kernel or whether to give it a dependency on an older (lenny / testing) kernel. I don't know what guidelines might be applicable for such decisions. > Do not use the ati installer, if you realy feal annoyed by this issue, > downgrade your kernel and the fglrx debian version, but do not frickle > it around. OK. Thanks, that makes sense. I ultimately found that fglrx-source is unable to compile on the older kernel. This is probably not too important anyway as going with fglrx from ATI works on the older kernel but also requires a downgrade of Xorg, which in turns breaks a lot of GNOME components. In the hopes that this may be a temporary issue until the next fglrx release I went with the radeonhd driver for the 2400 HD hardware. Thanks for all the help and great job maintaining this package.
