Subject: gnome-terminal: Keyboard shortcuts not working since upgrade to 2.24.
Date: Sun, 08 Mar 2009 17:21:10 -0700
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.24.3-2
Severity: normal

Since upgrading to gnome-terminal 2.24, my custom keyboard shortcuts for
new tab, next tab, and previous tab no longer work.

I don't know whether the fault lies with the new gnome-terminal, the new
gconf, or some interaction between the two; since the new gnome-terminal
requires the new gconf I can't easily test them in isolation.

The following steps will recreate the problem starting from a new user
account:

1) Create the file ~/.gconf.path, containing the following line:

xml:readonly:$(HOME)/.gconf.shared

2) Create the directory ~/.gconf.shared.

3) Create the file ~/.gconf.shared/%gconf-tree.xml, containing the
   following XML:

<gconf>
        <dir name="apps">
                <dir name="gnome-terminal">
                        <dir name="keybindings">

                                        <stringvalue><Alt>Left</stringvalue>

                                        <stringvalue><Alt>Right</stringvalue>

                                        <stringvalue><Control><Alt>n</stringvalue>

                                        <stringvalue>disabled</stringvalue>

                        </dir>
                </dir>
        </dir>
</gconf>

4) Log out and log back in.

5) Start gnome-terminal.

6) Press Ctrl-Alt-n, which should open a new tab. No new tab opens.

7) Open a new tab manually through the menu. Press Alt-Left, which should
   switch back to the previous tab; it does not.

8) Look in the Tabs menu, and notice that "Next Tab" and "Previous Tab" have no
   keyboard shortcuts listed next to them.

Note that editing the keyboard shortcuts via gnome-terminal seems to work fine.
Also note that other configuration settings in ~/.gconf.shared/%gconf-tree.xml
seem to work fine; for instance, I configured the appearance of the default
profile via the same file, and those settings applied as expected.

I tried downgrading to gnome-terminal 2.22.1-1, and that fixed the
problem: the keyboard shortcuts work again.

It appears that the entire keyboard shortcuts system was changed, and it
seems to me that not for better. Most shortcuts are either moved or
deleted.

I personally miss "go to tab 1/..." the most, the current default makes it
impossible to use many programs like irssi which use Alt-1/... -- at least
without using a single tab or reverting to some other terminal emulator.

This has been done with the goal to homogenize shortcuts in applications
using tabs.

Setting the keybindings for switching tabs is now done at the GTK+
level, and they will affect gedit and epiphany the same way. You can do
that in your .gtkrc-2.0 file. Please have a look at the GTK+ reference
(in devhelp), section “Resource Files” for an explanation on how to
achieve that.

First of all, most applications in GNOME have a policy of supporting old
configuration and migrating it forward somehow, not least of which
because people often share gconf configuration between systems. So at a
minimum, this bug still applies because gnome-terminal doesn't seem to
do that.

Second, as far as I can tell, if I set the keyboard shortcuts in
gnome-terminal through gnome-terminal's Edit->Keyboard Shortcuts...,
they work just fine.

And third, gnome-terminal fundamentally *can't* use the same keyboard
shortcuts as other applications, because gnome-terminal needs to pass
most keystrokes through to the terminal.

Sounds like a good idea, but...

I spent over a couple of hours, but didn't manage to find the documentation.
That section of the GTK+ reference says how to set a keybinding, but you
need to know how the shortcut in question is named -- and the purported new
name is a piece I failed to find.

However, I found Gnome bugs #548600 and #562834, and they don't even mention
shortcuts being moved -- just removed outright, a change which already has
been reverted in trunk.

I pulled and compiled the trunk, and indeed, the shortcuts are back in the
old place.

So I guess there is some confusion...

But back to Josh's original bug:

It seems that the Alt-1 issue is not connected to his problem after all.
Sorry for unknowingly semi-hijacking this BTS bug.

Actually, that commit ("Fix key_from_gconf_key logic") just fixed a bug
I happened to notice while reviewing the code. The bugfix for the
inability to set keyboard shortcuts via mandatory gconf settings came
from commit b43fcdfd20c6eb4f972333080a435ba8567cc6fa ("Always unlock the
accel path before trying to change it").
