Subject: xserver-xorg-video-intel: X does not start with an intel 82830 chip on a fujitsu-siemens Lifebook S6010 laptop
Date: Sun, 01 Jul 2007 19:16:06 +0200
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.0.0-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

Updated my system (Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S6010) running testing today
and X doesn't start anymore.

I tried this :

* installing xserver-xorg-video-intel from experimental with
apt-get -t experimental install xserver-xorg-video-intel
* dpkg -l xserver-xorg-video-intel gives me "xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.0.0-5"
* X -configure
* X -config /root/xorg.conf.new

and got this :
X Window System Version 1.3.0
Release Date: 19 April 2007
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 1.3
Build Operating System: Linux Debian
Current Operating System: Linux anna 2.6.18-4-686 #1 SMP Mon Mar 26

I reinstalled testing version of xserver-xorg-video-intel and got the
same error (without the "no screen found" at the end, I have to Ctrl-C
to stop X.)

dpkg -l xserver-xorg-video-intel gives me "xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.0.0-1"

All the details of my conf are in the automatic report below.

In state, I cannot use X anymore on my laptop and it worked fine since
this morning.

sincerely,

jerome moinet

Unfortunately, the new intel driver has problems on old chipsets like
yours. Another debian user reported similar problems in [1], and the
problem is known upstream at [2].

Some bugs have been fixed in the upstream git repository since we
release 2:2.0.0-5, we should upload a new git snapshot in experimental
in the near future. In the meantime, feel free to build your own git
snapshot and let us know whether it helps. Or just keep using the old
xserver-xorg-video-i810 from Etch/stable.

Cheers,
Brice

Subject: #431326: This bug has probably never been fixed
Date: Tue, 05 Aug 2008 20:59:01 +0200
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
My problem exactly matches this bug description, I have a
fujitsu-siemens Lifebook S6010 laptop with an intel 82830 chip and X
does not start.

I noticed this bug quite a long time ago, and it was marked as fixed
because the bugs it was merged with have been fixed. But I suspect that
this bug was in fact a different problem, because no upgrade (I am using
lenny/testing) fixed it for my laptop.

Note: I don't know if this is the correct process, but I unmerged the
bug to avoid reopening all merged bugs since I think the other are
different issues.

Hi Raphael,

Please send a copy of your video bios. The following should work (as
root):
# cd /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:00:02.0
# echo 1 > rom
# cat rom > /tmp/rom
# echo 0 > rom

Cheers,
Julien

Can you try the patch at

I'll try to build some packages with that patch so you could test them,
I guess that would be easiest.

Yeah that's not surprising.

In fact I have no experience at all in the debian way of building
packages. Should I apply this patch to the debian source package
xserver-xorg-video-intel from lenny ? from sid ? Or should I apply it to
the debian xorg source package ? Or should I download the original
X11R7.3 source from X.org and apply the patch to it?

Independant note: I have just also noticed that the same bug also occurs
when using the intel X driver in etch (newly made available due to
etchnhalf). Until now I have used i810 on etch which still works (I have
both an etch installation on this machine for production use and a lenny
installation for tests).

thanks

I downloaded the deb file of 2.2.1-1 (last common ancestor for etch and
lenny's package) from snapshots.debian.org and tried, it does not work
either. (which is not suprising, as probably no release of
xserver-xorg-video-intel has ever worked on that laptop)

The patch has been committed in the upstream git repo on the master and
2.4 branch, so you can test it by building according to:
  http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/10936.html
Make sure you use the 'xf86-video-intel-2.4-branch' branch since
the master branch won't compile for you.

Ok I followed the instructions at that page, and managed to build the
driver and test it. I still get the same error and X does not start.

Here is the xinit output :

Did you see any improvement with more recent intel drivers?

I have just installed debian sid on the machine to test.

I have xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.7.1-1, which is the version
available in sid currently.

The bug still occurs (X fails to start), see attached output from xinit.

IIRC, the problem with your hardware is that the LVDS chipset is not
supported. So the internal laptop panel cannot work. But the other parts
of the hardware, including what drives the external monitor, may be
properly managed by the driver.

I am updating the URL of the relevant upstream bug since the other one
have been marked as fixed.

could you please tell us how it goes with squeeze or sid? It was a
while back, but I'd like to know whether you're still around before
closing this old bug.

Bug still exists in squeeze

Looking through the logs on launchpad for the same Ubuntu bug the only
saving grace is the original i810 driver. Nothing else seems to work as
Fujitsu uses some lvds chips of its own which are not supported by
Intel's driver.

Summary for Fujitsu Lifebook S6010:

Squeeze intel xorg driver completely freezes the machine, the screen
goes unhealthy white, nothing works.

Lenny intel driver cannot find an LVDS panel it can recognise and
aborts, machine works, x does not.

Neither squeeze nor lenny vesa driver works (and I need Xv on this
machine anyway so this is not an option).

Last i810 before xorg moved from cvs to git builds cleanly on lenny
(with the message that says move to git commented out in configure), but
throws a segfault on initialisation.

I am going to try to fish out a sufficiently old i810 driver from the
freedesktop git or if that fails start walking back the i810 tree in the
old freedesktop CVS until I hit a release that works.

Updated summary:

The only way I have found so far to make this ghastly piece of hardware
work with anything reasonably current is to use one of the framebuffer
drivers.

The best choice is the intelfb kernel driver and fbdev on top of that.
As this driver is not in debian current the fallback option is the
vesafb driver and the fbdev X11 driver on top. Ugly, performance is
nothing to shout about but works.

Brgds,

Support for some more dvo chips was added to the kernel since then,
hopefully that makes it work. Otherwise you're probably out of luck at
this point.
