Subject: Can't view pds with e.g. mutt if evince is already running
Date: Tue, 05 Jun 2007 01:48:58 +0200
Package: evince
Version: 0.8.1-2
Severity: important

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Consider the following scenario where evince is already running.

- - You select an attachment in mutt to view.
- - mutt copies the attachment to /tmp/somename.pdf, calls "see
/tmp/somename.pdf", waits for return and deletes the file.
- - see calls evince which detects the running instance, passes along the
  filename and exits immediately.
- - The runnning instance of evince tries to open the file in /tmp but
fails because mutt already deleted it. (If it succeeds, try switching
to the next page or resizing the window.)

The real fix is to have evince block and wait until thee window is
closed, maybe via command line switch if that behaviour should not be
default. This can be achieved by setting DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS to
some invalid value (e.g. "invalid" does work), but this causes evince to
use default settings.

What's the status update on this bug? Why is evince trying to be so
smart and does things differently if another process is already
running. I find it annoying that evince cannot open the same file
twice. I find it very annoying that evince returns to the shell even
though the reason why I called it (open a window to let me view the
PDF) is not complete (I have not yet closed the window).

If this is evince's understanding of usability, maybe it could grow
an option that would make it more compatible with the way Unix
programs have worked for decades and it was possible to wait for
a process to exit to know that now the task was over too?

It's stalled waiting on upstream, see

That's what the upstream bug report suggests in case changing it completely to
wait for the process to finish is not wanted.

Cheers,
Emilio
