I'm experiencing frequent lock-ups of my machine since installing
bullseye on Saturday, rendering it inoperable for several minutes at a
time, most recently following a launch of GNOME Disk Utility.

Looking in journalctl afterwards, I note:

Subject: linux-image-5.9.0-4-amd64: nouveau DRM timeout causes machine to freeze
Date: Sun, 13 Dec 2020 18:12:44 +0000
Hello again,

I wanted to share a further finding since the bug report was submitted.

Following repeated lock-ups making the system practically unusable, I
have installed linux-image-5.8.0-2-amd64 (package version 5.8.10-1)
from the Debian snapshot archive.

Having now tested this 5.8 kernel for several days without incident, it
appears this is a regression in the 5.9 kernel.

Kind regards,
Phil

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
more info which might be important:

twice now in the past week when this bug has caused the x hang issue i have
been unable to log in afterwards. i believe that both times (certainly the
most recent) it was after i had ctrl+alt+f2 to a terminal and blindly
logged in and run some command. in the most recent case the command was #
dmesg > /root/dmsg

in this most recent case, the reason for being unable to log in afterwards
was wrong permissions (owner) set on ~/.Xauthority
the permissions were 600 (which i think are correct) but owner and group
was root.
once this was corrected i was able to log in again.

the first time of the two was similar in some ways. i had also blindly
logged in to the terminal and run some command (killall firefox-esr, which
i thought at the time might be causing the hang).
after rebooting (using ctrl+alt+del) the same permissions issue as
previously described for .Xauthority was affecting a different file, also
removing my ability to log in. this file was ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
after changing the owner to my user i was able to log in again.

in both cases logging in as a different user than the one which was in use
at the time of the crash, worked as normal.

a third item which might also be pertinent is the following:
for around the same amount of time that the x-hang issue has been affecting
this machine (1-2 weeks?) when logging in with sddm or lightdm, if password
is incorrect, the system re-asks for username/password right away. however
if the password is CORRECT, the system hangs for two minutes before showing
the desktop.
not sure if this one is related or not!

i'm using testing with lxqt

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
i have done a bit more testing. here are some additional notes:

i have found a reliable way to trigger the issue. i am using firefox-esr.
to cause the x-freeze issue, i can play a youtube video. and as it is
playing, i repeatedly move the mouse over the video, and then off of it.
this causes the "play controls" at the bottom of the youtube video to
appear and disappear repeatedly. eventually this triggers the problem. the
mouse pointer gets sluggish, the video starts to stutter and eventually
stops updating all together. the mouse gets very sluggish and after a while
will not move at all. sometimes takes several minutes of moving the mouse
to move 1cm on the screen -- that sort of thing.

during this time the keyboard seems to remain responsive: i can ctrl+alt+f2
into a terminal, and although i cannot see the terminal because the x
screen is frozen still, i can log in as a user, run commands that seem to
execute immediately, and if i hold the backspace key i get repeated rapid
beeps from the computer. this suggests to me that the keyboard and the rest
of the system remains responsive, and only x is hung/frozen.

since i am now able to trigger this issue at will, i have tested several
times where i log in to terminal, run a command, and then reboot with
ctrl+alt+del. i have done this several times now and not triggered the
"unable to log in after screen freeze" issue, so that part of it remains
intermittent -- i am USUALLY able to log in after the x-freeze without
interventions. twice now however i have been unable to until i modified
permissions (ownership) on files in my home directory, as described
previously in this bug report.

Package: src:linux
Version: 5.9.11-1
Followup-For: Bug #976788

Hello,

I have the same problem as described the previous reportes.

The lock-up appears when using kwin-x11 display manager with compositing enabled. It does not appear on previous kernel versions (<=5.8).

This is the relevant kernel log;

I think this is the upstream issue:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/nouveau/-/issues/14

As of 5.10.3, the regression appears to remain.

Subject: Patch to fix: nouveau DRM timeout causes machine to freeze
Date: Thu, 28 Jan 2021 21:29:58 +0000
Hi,

A patch [1] has been proposed by Bastian Beranek [2] to fix the issue.
The issue has been found to affect NV50/Tesla GPUs on kernels 5.9+ and
renders the system unusable.

I've personally tested the patch (and its earlier variant) on the 5.10
kernel for the past couple of weeks without issue and it has passed an
initial review [3] by the nouveau maintainers.

The upstream patch appears to be some way off making it into mainline
before it can be backported to 5.10, so given the scope and effects of
the bug, I'm submitting it here to be considered to patch the bullseye
kernel in the interim.

I include the contents of the patch at the end of this mail for your
convenience.

Cheers,
Phil

Subject: [PATCH v3] drm/gpu/nouveau/dispnv50: Restore pushing of all
data.

Commit f844eb485eb056ad3b67e49f95cbc6c685a73db4 introduced a regression
for
NV50, which lead to visual artifacts, tearing and eventual crashes.

In the changes of f844eb485eb056ad3b67e49f95cbc6c685a73db4 only the
first line
was correctly translated to the new NVIDIA header macros:

- PUSH_NVSQ(push, NV827C, 0x0110, 0,
- 0x0114, 0);
+ PUSH_MTHD(push, NV827C, SET_PROCESSING,
+ NVDEF(NV827C, SET_PROCESSING, USE_GAIN_OFS, DISABLE));

The lower part ("0x0114, 0") was probably omitted by accident.

This patch restores the push of the missing data and fixes the
regression.

Subject: Fixed upstream: nouveau DRM timeout causes machine to freeze
Date: Thu, 04 Feb 2021 11:14:48 +0000
Thanks to the efforts of the nouveau maintainers, the fix has now made
it into 5.10.13.

Is my understanding correct that this will be make it into bullseye
naturally or does the freeze prevent that?

Cheers, Phil

5.10.13-1 was uploaded for unstable (and targetting bullseye) today.
