Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Nicholas D Steeves <nsteeves@gmail.com>

Package name : auto-dictionary-el
Version : 1.1
Upstream Author : Nikolaj Schumacher
URL : https://wiki.debian.org/EmacsenTeam/Team
License : GPL-2+
Programming Lang: elisp
Description : automatic dictionary switcher for Emacs spell checking

Auto-dictionary is a minor mode that automatically sets
 'ispell-dictionary'. It hooks into flyspell's on-the-fly spell
checking, and extends these checks to also detect language. This
package is useful for Emacs users who work in multiple languages.
  .
 Auto-dictionary supports the following languages:
   Catalan
   Classical Greek - ἑλληνικά
   Danish - Dansk
   English
   Esperanto
   French - Français
   German - Deutsch
   Hindi - हिन्दी
   Hungarian - Magyar
   Modern Greek - νέα ελληνικά
   Norwegian Bokmål
   Norwegian Nynorsk
   Portuguese - Português
   Romanian - Românâ, Româneşte
   Slovak - Slovenčina
   Slovene - Slovenian
   Spanish - Español
   Swedish - Svenska

--

Antoine, does it detect language with per-buffer granularity, or
support mixing languages in the same buffer? Thanks for mentioning
that you use this software on #debian-emacs :-) P.S. please ping me if
I take more than two weeks to package this

I do not yet use this package and have been manually switching between
languages, which is why I'm motivated to package it. I plan to
maintain it as part of the Debian Emacsen Team, and the team policy is
here: https://wiki.debian.org/EmacsenTeam/Team

I will require a sponsor for the initial upload.

Regards,
Nicholas

You probably meant this here:

URL: https://nschum.de/src/emacs/auto-dictionary/

> Antoine, does it detect language with per-buffer granularity, or
> support mixing languages in the same buffer?

I don't know! It *apparently* does that if I read the above homepage
correctly:

"It is also possible to insert text according to the current dictionary
and have it updated automatically when it changes. This is great for
your text templates and signatures."

> Thanks for mentioning
> that you use this software on #debian-emacs :-)

Well, I *just* started using it - I don't actually know if it really
works or anything. :p But I fixed up a function (mode-to-be) that I was
using for that instead:

 (defun anarcat/author-mode ()
"toggle a bunch of minor modes for authorship

this should be converted to a minor mode in itself, or maybe as
 hooks fro writeroom?

see Elisp manual, 22.3 Minor Modes"
   (interactive)
   (writegood-mode)
   (wc-mode)
   (writeroom-mode)
- (anarcat/change-dict "en")
+ (adict-guess-dictionary)

So basically, instead of forcing the "english" dictionary in my author
"mode", I let adict guess it. It seems to work for english at least...

I'd be happy to help.

:-$ yes, that's what I meant :-)

In my testing it seems to count words-matched-per-dictionary. eg: 50
matches for fr and 50 matches for en won't change the default
dictionary. 51 matches for fr will switch it to fr. If another two
en words are added it will switch to en. Whichever language is not
selected appears underlined and misspelled.

The following newer/less mature package supports different languages
per paragraph:

  https://github.com/tmalsburg/guess-language.el

Would you prefer to switch this RFP guess-language? If it works well
then I feel like that might be a better one to package.

I have a similar function ;-)

That matches my use case.

Hmm... I'm not sure I really need per-graf language capabilities. I'm
bilingual, but I'm trying to keep one document in one language. ;) And
if I fail, it certainly won't fail on graf boundaries but right in the
middle of a sentence. :p

auto-dict has 97000 downloads while guess-lang has 900. I would wait a
bit more for guess-language to stabilize and popularize before packaging
it. Also note that github has "0 releases" for guess-lang.

That makes sense, in that case it's a feature and not a bug :-) We
should send a PR to upstream to make this more explicit in their
README.md. Feel free to forward my part of the above correspondence
if necessary, or let me know if you'd prefer if I add this useful
point.

Wow, auto-dict is overwhelmingly the standard! Yeah, that also
definitely justifies it's place in Debian, even if guess-lang is
eventually added.

No problem of course. :) After a short review, build, install and smoke
test, I've uploaded the package and it should end up in NEW shortly.
