Subject: login: shows error about "ALWAYS_SET_PATH" which is supported by "su" from "util-linux"
Date: Mon, 06 Aug 2018 10:51:47 +0200
Package: login
Version: 1:4.5-1.1
Severity: minor

Dear Andreas, dear maintainers,

for now I use "ALWAYS_SET_PATH" as mentioned in "NEWS.Debian" of "util-linux"
package in order to keep my backup script which needs root access and access
to a SSH agent running in a regular user session working. I intend to
configure sudo to take over the environment variables for SSH agent to
the root session at some time.

However, as long as that option is set, the "login" command complains about
it after entering the user name. You can see this easily by logging in on
a tty. Or by doing it on a shell, in this even before entering the user name:

somehost:~> LANG=C login
configuration error - unknown item 'ALWAYS_SET_PATH' (notify administrator)
somehost login: ^C

Expected results: No error message or warning as this is a configuration
option support by "su" from "util-linux" which shares the configuration file
"/etc/login.defs" with the "shadow" tools.

Thanks,
Martin

I can confirm bug just shown from a text console when trying to login (with
username different than root).

I would like to suggest that, if old behaviour is kept by adding
"ALWAYS_SET_PATH yes" in /etc/login.defs, it would be nice to have this
line already added in the file.

It was a decision of util-linux maintainers to change the behaviour
and /etc/default/su would be a better place to revert to the old
behaviour which should be shipped by su.

There is no /etc/default/su file by default, but if you create one and
put

ALWAYS_SET_PATH yes

in it, then su *does* change the PATH variable, and this avoids the warning
message from login.

This has been done on stretch, but has no effect on this:

gene@coyote:~$ sudo -i
[sudo] password for gene:
root@coyote:~$ su amanda -c "geany bak-indices-configs"
configuration error - unknown item 'ALWAYS_SET_PATH' (notify administrator)

Is there a better fix for uptodate stretch?

/etc/default/su uses "shell" format, so it should be:
    ALWAYS_SET_PATH=yes
instead.

I have updated the NEWS entry, and will close this bug with the next
upload.

I don't I'd be so quick to cancel/close this bug, as that is not where it
goes for me. My stretch does not have an /etc/default/su file. Yet su
works. I generally use konsole and run tde, not kde. Fix it for
everybody if you are claiming a fix.

Lets have a better 2021.

stretch does not get fixes any more. Fixes go into bullseye.
On bullseye, creating an /etc/defaults/su file with the suggested
contents works.

If you are suggesting this does not work on stretch, that might be
correct, but is of no relevance to me.

Closes: 905564 977871
Changes:
 util-linux (2.36.1-4) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * bsdextrautils: Install colcrt (Closes: #977871)
   * hwclock.sh: remove obsolete startup code.
Let the on startup code always be handled by the udev rule we install.
On any normal system, systemd or sysvinit, "hwclock.sh start" was a
no-op for the last few Debian releases already. Also, with initramfs,
hwclock.sh never got executed *before* fsck for root.
If your system does not have udev but has an RTC in localtime or one
needing drift adjustments, you will need to handle this yourself.
   * hwclock: remove all broken settings.
Since buster, BADYEAR was broken, because upstream removed the code in
     v2.30-rc1.
Since buster, the alpha cmos support was broken, because upstream
     removed the code.
Since stretch, HWCLOCKACCESS=no was broken on udev systems, because the
     helper ignored it.
Remove all those settings; also remove HCTOSYS_DEVICE from the
default-shipped /etc/default/hwclock, as changing it is extremely
     difficult to get right.
   * hwclock.sh: add comments when to use this init script
   * Update advice on ALWAYS_SET_PATH to use /etc/default/su (Closes: #905564)
   * Remove Suggests: console-tools. Gone since 2013.
