Dear Maintainer,

The -g/--grep option was recently added to the man page, but:

	$ journalctl --grep=blah
	Compiled without pattern matching support

this could be a man page bug, of course, although it's a useful feature.

thanks very much.

best regards,
calum.

As the message says, systemd has been compiled without pattern matching
support. This is deliberate, as this would required linking against
pcre2, which would basically make this library mandatory on every
system. That's why I hesitated to enable that feature.

Package: systemd
Version: 238-5
Followup-For: Bug #890265

Why is linking to pcre2 such a problem? It is a 500k library, yes, but the grepping feature of journactl is very useful. Right now you have to pipe journalctl output to grep, but this is not equivalent, because the --grep option looks for matching patterns in the MESSAGE field while grepping manually greps the whole log…

Installing pcre2 by default would maybe motivate the grep maintainers to migrate away from the deprecated libpcre3 and move to libpcre2-posix0 instead...

Thank you very very much for maintaining systemd, by the way! :)

Ciao,
Tiziano

Opening a bug on the grep package seems a more reliable way to
communicate with the grep maintainers than making changes to a different
package. I've opened <https://bugs.debian.org/907651> and
<https://bugs.debian.org/907652>.

I'm fine with turning this feature on in buster+1.
