Subject: samba: Panic on opening file on samba share with Microsoft Project
Date: Thu, 9 Nov 2017 15:51:00 +0800
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: samba
Version: 2:4.7.0+dfsg-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After updating Debian testing release with samba upgraded to
2:4.7.0+dfsg-2, when trying to open a .mpp file on a samba share with
Microsoft Project, the samba process panics. Microsoft Project reports that
the file cannot be opened.

Downgrading to 2:4.6.7+dfsg-2 (the previous testing release version)
resolves the problem.

Downgrading libtevent0 to 0.9.31-1 (the previous testing release version)
while keeping samba at 2:4.7.0+dfsg-2 DID NOT resolve the problem.

Client OS: Microsoft Windows 7
Client Application: Microsoft Project 2007 (Similar problem occurs with
Microsoft Excel 2013 and 2016)
Action causing the samba panic: "File/Open..." in Microsoft Project to open
a .mpp file on the samba share

Enclosed herewith is the "log level 10" /var/log/samba/log.smbd from
starting the samba server, to attempting to access the shared file causing
the panic, to stopping the samba server. (The process that panicked is
pid=15190.)

Thanks for investigating.

Regards,
Frank Chung

Hai,

Can you try the following.

move these to the RO share.
force user = nobody
force group = nogroup

remove these from the config.
nt acl support = no
usershare max shares = 0
kernel oplocks = no
kernel share modes = no
posix locking = no

Or if really needed, at least remove this part, if you need the above settings.
socket options = IPTOS_LOWDELAY TCP_NODELAY
use sendfile = yes
aio read size = 4096
aio write size = 4096
vfs objects = aio_linux

about the veto files, remove the last bit (.*/ )
veto files = /Thumbs.db/*.shs/*.lnk/Desktop.ini/.*/

then try again.
if that works, enable the vfs object aio_linux again, but then put it within the share definition.

> Downgrading libtevent0 to 0.9.31-1 (the previous testing release version) while keeping samba at 2:4.7.0+dfsg-2 DID NOT resolve the problem.
That may give other problems, samba 4.7.x needs minimal 0.9.33 for tevent.

Best regards,

Louis

Dear Louis,

I tried the following in turn:

1. Adopt all of your suggested changes, except the last bit: "enable vfs
objects = aio_linux, but within the share definition"
Result: problem resolved

2. Add the last bit: "enable vfs objects = aio_linux, but within the share
definition"
Result: problem occurs again

3. Revert back to my original config, but just disable vfs objects =
aio_linux
Result: problem resolved

I also randomly tried disabling / changing other options while keeping
aio_linux loaded. Nothing seems to help resolve the problem, not even
disabling "aio read size" and "aio write size" or setting them to very
large values (in effect trying to just load aio_linux but prevent async I/O
from actually happening).

Let me know if trying other configs might help with diagnosis.

Regards,
Frank

From the reply from samba.org bugzilla.
Response: Volker Lendecke 2017-11-10 07:45:25 UTC

WONTFIX might sound harsh, but the fix is not to ship aio_linux in debian.

Linux AIO is not suiteable for samba's file access requirements.
It only works on O_DIRECT for page-aligned accesses, something Samba does not do.
The fix is to just say "aio write size = 1" and "aio read size = 1" without any vfs objects.
This activates the threaded implementation for async I/O that is implemented in core Samba.
Please transfer this info to the debian package maintainer (if you are not the one yourself :-)
and close the debian bug with the same statement.

Please remove aio_linux from the debian package.

Best regards,

Louis

Marking as wontfix here too.

I suggest to keep it if it has some use. Frank Chung: Why did you use this vfs?

I’m afraid I have no real rational basis for it, except that I inherited
the machine from another admin and the settings were working well through
all the upgrades up to the previous testing release 2:4.6.7+dfsg-2.

Please don't keep it. It just confuses folks and the code should have
been removed upstream much earlier, and we have an alternative that is
much safer.
