Subject: RFP: keepassxc -- Community fork of KeePassX, a free and open-source cross-platform password manager.
Date: Tue, 14 Feb 2017 23:35:32 +0100
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name    : keepassxc
  Version : 2.1.1
  Upstream Author : KeePassXC <packaging@keepassxc.org>
* URL             : https://keepassxc.org
* License         : GPLv2, GPLv3
  Programming Lang: C++
Description : Community fork of KeePassX, a free and open-source
cross-platform password manager.

KeePassXC aims to incorporate many pull requests as well as additional
newly developed features that have never been merged into KeePassX.
Besides many bug fixes and other minor changes, the current version
(2.1.1) already contains the following additional features:

- Autotype on all three major platforms (Linux, Windows, OS X)
- Stand-alone password generator
- Password strength meter
- Use website's favicons as entry icons
- Merging of databases
- Automatic reload when the database changed on disk
- KeePassHTTP support for use with PassIFox in Firefox and chromeIPass
in Google Chrome and Chromium

More features will come in 2.2.0. (e.g. Yubikey support, Twofish cipher
support, a welcome screen redesign, general user interface improvements
etc.)

At the time of the fork, KeePassXC built upon the latest but never
released KeePassX source tree, which included the switch to Qt5.

I'm writing you as one of the main developers of KeePassXC. We would
like to get KeePassXC into the official Debian repositories and from
there into other derivatives such as Ubuntu. We would be willing to
package KeePassXC ourselves, but since none of us developers is an
active Debian user, we would like to ask first if someone else would be
willing to package it for us. In the interest of package quality, this
would likely be best. Packaging KeePassXC is (and for the foreseeable
future will be) quite similar to packaging KeePassX, so maybe the
original KeePassX maintainer could handle this if he's willing to? He's
on X-Debbugs-Cc.

Thanks and regards
Janek

I am not a maintainer or developer but an active user if debain and
keepass. I would be willing to take this in depending on timeframe. I have
time starting next week to devote to this. I have built packages in the
past so this is not a huge issue for me

Hi Matt,

Just wanted to ask if you had an opportunity to advance this issue
somehow? Any ETA when we can expect an official package?

So, are you still interested in this? I have a package mostly ready
(have not checked copyright and watch yet), it was really only a matter
of cloning the keepassx repo and then running sed s#keepassx#keepassxc#g
basically.

If I don't hear from you in the next days, I assume you lost interest,
and will upload the package (and push it to a collab-maint/keepassxc.git
repo, you are of course free to join).

The email bounced (address does not exist), and given that it's been 4 months
since Matt tried to ITP, and he did not answer to the query 2 months ago, it's
safe to assume he lost interest, so I'm taking ownership.

I pushed the packaging so far to
  https://anonscm.debian.org/git/collab-maint/keepassxc.git
(web ui will appear soon, and it might need some cleanup and rebasing
before release; also copyright file needs update).

Hello!

KeePassXC Team here.

Thanks for taking ownership and helping us getting into Debian repository.

About the copyright, you can take the COPYING file in the root directory
of KeePassXC, it's updated and already in debian format. It's only
missing the full licenses.

Another little thing, I've seen that in the man page file it still says
keepassx. You can take this man page that is more updated
[https://github.com/magkopian/keepassxc-debian/blob/master/keepassxc-2.2.0/debian/keepassxc.1]

If you need anything you can ask us here or on IRC (freenode
#keepassxc-dev).

Thanks for taking over! One more thing to add: we have a packaging
repository, which Matt started. Since you have taken over ownership of
the package, I want to offer you also taking over the repository if you
like: https://github.com/keepassxreboot/keepassxc-packaging

Hi Julian,

I was just about to file my own ITP for keepassxc when I stumpled upon
yours.

Could you give an update on the status? I'd be happy to help out with
packaging and/or uploading, if you like.

Greetings,
Bas.

debian/copyright needs an update and there's an embedded http
library that we might want to disable the feature using it.

I basically prepared the debian/copyright list of things to
add / change, but did not actually update it yet. Here's the
things that are different compared to COPYING (which also
lacks long licenses, but that's a different story):

[10:59:44] <juliank> src/gui/csvImport/CsvParserModel.cpp contains Copyright (C) 2016 Enrico Mariotti <enricomariotti@yahoo.it> - but "Enrico" is not mentioned anywhere
[11:01:33] <juliank> cmake/CodeCoverage.cmake appears twice in there for some reasons
[11:02:12] <juliank> src/http Copyright (C) 2013 Francois Ferrand is missing
[11:03:47] <juliank> qhttp/http-parser/LICENSE-MIT seems weird
[11:04:12] <juliank> "Additional changes are licensed under the same terms as NGINX and copyright Joyent, Inc. and other Node contributors. All rights reserved."
[11:04:25] <juliank> but then it lists an MIT license, so it's not clear what that's supposed to mean
[11:04:52] <juliank> Not to mention that "Igor Sysoev" does not appear anywhere in COPYING
[11:08:27] <juliank> src/keys has files Copyright (C) 2014 Kyle Manna <kyle@kylemanna.com>
[11:10:35] <juliank> src/totp is Apache licensed, effectively rendering the entire program GPL-3. Not sure if that has any problem yet.
[11:11:08] <juliank> several files are Copyright (C) 2017 Weslly Honorato <<U+FEFF>weslly@protonmail.com>
[11:18:04] <juliank> tests/TestDatabase.*: * Copyright (C) 2017 Vladimir Svyatski <v.unreal@gmail.com>
[11:22:11] <juliank> tests/modeltest.*:** Copyright (C) 2015 The Qt Company Ltd
[11:23:12] <juliank> I don't think you can just drop debfx's copyright statement from copying and replace it with your own, though

Hi Julian, thanks for working on this, I can't wait to have this packaged!

I guess you are referring to the KeePassHTTP server. I know it poses
some security issues, but to me it's an important feature of KeePassXC
over KeePassX.

I would really like it if that feature could stay in the package, but be
disabled by default.

Hi Julian.

Do you still plan to package it? It would really be nice to finally see keepassxc in Debian (unstable and testing).
Thanks!

Hillel Lubman.
