Subject: netboot support
Date: Wed, 21 Dec 2016 15:17:59 -0500
Source: live-wrapper
Severity: wishlist
It would be nice to have lwr generate net-bootable images. live-build
used to have a `--binary-images netboot` option and while I am not
*exactly* sure how it works, it seems to create a tarball that we can
then deploy on a TFTP server...
I *may* be possible to boot the ISO image from a tftp server directly,
with a hack like syslinux's ISO support, but I never really got this
to work reliably.
I am trying to migrate my live image from debirf - which can generate
a ISO image or a initrd with everything inside. I wonder if
vmdebootstrap could do a similar magic to build a simple
vmlinuz/initrd combination with all we need...

Hi,
Thanks for your bug. I believe a future version of live-wrapper should have
this, but it's definitely not going to make it for stretch.
vmdebootstrap is going to be rearchitected[1] and the future beyond the
stretch release currently looks uncertain.
Thanks,
Iain.

I was hoping I could boot the resulting ISO using syslinux's memdisk,
but so far it's failing in my tests with qemu. I tried this:
LABEL debian-live
KERNEL memdisk
APPEND initrd=stressant-stretch-amd64-0.2.iso iso raw
i also tried with only "iso" ("bootstrap too large to load"), only "raw"
(hangs after "Loading boot sector... booting..."), "harddisk" (same as
"raw") and nothing (same as "raw").
I have also tried to make this work with Debian install and Debian live
images. So far, they both fail to load their rootfs properly... But I
could be doing something wrong with syslinux here...

yeah, i read that post - and i'm a bit worried... not sure we want yet
another new DSL...
it seems we are constantly reinventing d-i here. :)
