Hi! I've tried to reproduce this bug in an up-to-date sid environment without
luck.

Please try again with an up to date system. If it still crashed please try
with a clean environment (a new user). In case you can not reproduce it with a
new user please keep your user's config so we can track the issue if
necessary.

Thanks, Lisandro.

What i think is happening is that kdevelop uses llvm-3.8,
and i have clang-3.9 which also pulls llvm-3.9
So *please* try with llvm-3.8 *and* llvm-3.9 both installed.

Based on disscussion in #debian-kde, i believe the issue *mostly* happens
only if the mesa driver that is used, is linked to llvm:

dpkg -L libgl1-mesa-dri | grep ".so$" | xargs ldd | grep -i "_dri.so\|llvm"
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i915_dri.so:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/kms_swrast_dri.so:
       libLLVM-3.9.so.1 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so.1
(0x00007f19c2011000)
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/nouveau_dri.so:
       libLLVM-3.9.so.1 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so.1
(0x00007fe20d149000)
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/nouveau_vieux_dri.so:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r200_dri.so:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r300_dri.so:
       libLLVM-3.9.so.1 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so.1
(0x00007ff7b6689000)
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r600_dri.so:
       libLLVM-3.9.so.1 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so.1
(0x00007f6160321000)
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeon_dri.so:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeonsi_dri.so:
       libLLVM-3.9.so.1 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so.1
(0x00007f501df09000)
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/swrast_dri.so:
       libLLVM-3.9.so.1 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so.1
(0x00007f50d31f9000)
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/virtio_gpu_dri.so:
       libLLVM-3.9.so.1 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so.1
(0x00007ff4cb0e1000)
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/vmwgfx_dri.so:
       libLLVM-3.9.so.1 => /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so.1
(0x00007fe516071000)

So it *will* happen with
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/kms_swrast_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/nouveau_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r300_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r600_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeonsi_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/swrast_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/virtio_gpu_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/vmwgfx_dri.so

And *probably* *will not* happen with
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i915_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/nouveau_vieux_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/r200_dri.so
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeon_dri.so

As suggested in the IRC, simple rebuild against llvm-3.9 should fix it.

I can confirm this. I was just going to post my findings and then saw
this response. I switched from nouveau to the proprietary nvidia
drivers and this "fixed" the problem with kdevelop for me.

I ran into the same issue, running as a new user didn't help. As a
crude test I temporarily removed the kdevclangsupport.so plugin which
is linked against LLVM-3.8 and I could then start kdevelop again. I
then checked what part was linked against LLVM-3.9 and this appeared
to be nouveau_dri.so (loaded by libGL.so.1). I then switched to the
proprietary nvidia driver and the problem was gone. (Of course not a
real solution; indeed having the clang plugin linked against LLVM-3.9
should fix the problem for real).

Kind regards,

Martijn

That's the test we needed, thanks a lot!

I don't know if kdevelop can work with llvm-3.9... if anyone wants to build
kdevelop against llvm-3.9 and try it would be a nice way to give us a hand in
this.

On the other hand libclang-dev now defaults to 3.8 :-/

Hi LLVM maintainers!

We currently have an LLVM-related bug on kdevelop (#846410). It seems that if
the user is using mesa compiled against LLVM 3.9 kdevelop will crash upon
starting (or creating a new project) because it is linked to LLVM 3.8.

Now I could switch it to use 3.9, but that might get another set of people
into trouble.

I would like to know if there is a way we can solve this somehow.

We are currently build depending upon llvm-3.8-dev (>= 1:3.8.1) and
libclang-3.8-dev (>= 1:3.8.1), but maybe we should be using some other package
(AFAIU kdevelop can use llvm >= 3.6).

Please try to keep 846410@bugs.debian.org while replying :)

Thanks in advance!

KDevelop maintainer here.

You can build KDevelop against anything >= 3.6 just fine. It's recommended to
use the latest possible version. Thus 3.9 will work just fine.

Regarding the issue with llvmpipe: That's indeed super unfortunate, but I
don't see an easy solution out of it. The only possibility to have two
versions of LLVM runtimes loaded:

a) enable symbol versioning on the Clang/LLVM side, or
b) link against static version of libclang/LLVM to import all
   Clang/LLVM symbols into the KDevelop Clang plugin.
c) use libclang in a separate non-GUI process
   (requires a whole overhaul of the integration in KDevelop though...)

Happy to hear some recommendations from the LLVM guys!

For what it's worth: I rebuilt the kdevelop package with updated
dependencies to llvm-3.9-dev and libclang-3.9-dev. The package seems
to build just fine and after installing it the problem is fixed, both
as expected. I have only tested it for a short while, so not a very
extensive test. (And I'm probably not the best candidate for testing
since I only switched over to kdevelop a couple of months ago, so not
really an expert user... ;-) )

I'll continue to use this new build and let you know if I encounter
anything strange, but as Kevin Funk said, it should work just fine.

Kind regards,

Martijn

I did install it wothout issues, but then we figured out that users that
siffer this crash are also using a video driver compiled against llvm-3.9.

We still don't know if it's something we can "fix". For now I'm going to
upload kdevelop compiled against 3.9... But we might start seeing crashes for
people using stuff compiled against 3.8 or 4.0...

We should try to get (a). (b) is a non-go in Debian, and (c) is really up to
you upstreams, with all the required effort it might mean.

I think you should report a bug upstream (kdevelop). I don't see how to fix that in the llvm-toolchain itself.

Sorry,
Sylvestre

Hi Sylvestre! I think kdevelop has nothing to do here: it's just linking
against llvm, and the creash happens when 3.8 and 3.9 get mixed in the same
process, and it seems to happen due to video drivers compiled against 3.9...

I have noted that llvm's packaging does not includes symbols files, so I do
not know if llvm has versioned symbols (I mean, ELF versioned symbols). That
would allow mixing two process with different LLVM versions without crashes
(as long as they do not share data between them).

Do you know if llvm symbols are ELF versioned?

Okay, lets make a Debian-like distribution that hits its schedules and is
close to bleeding edge.

I answer that myself. I ran:

pkgkde-gensymbols -plibllvm-3.8 -v1:3.8.1 -Osymbols.amd64 \
-e/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.8.so

pkgkde-gensymbols -plibllvm-3.9 -v1:3.9.1 -Osymbols9.amd64 \
-e/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libLLVM-3.9.so

I've attached the resulting symbols files, compressed.

As you can see both symbols files have their versions at @Base, meaning there
is no ELF versioning in them.

This crash can be easily fixed by adding ELF versioning to symbols. I'll file
a bug against llvm.

@pkg-llvm-team: I've sent two compressed files in a previous bug which got
stuck due to it's size. Please check the bug report for this.
