Subject: /usr/bin/xfce4-display-settings: resolution forgotten when monitor turned off-on
Date: Sun, 30 Oct 2016 00:43:51 -0700
Package: xfce4-settings
Version: 4.12.1-1
Severity: important
File: /usr/bin/xfce4-display-settings

Dear Maintainer,

using xfce (bug does not happen on kde or gnome), my monitor
settings reset to the auto settings (i.e. max resolution) every boot
and every time i turn my monitor off and on again. under kde or gnome
the resolution does reset after reboot, but gets restored to my prefered
one after (auto) login.

my monitor is a TV via hdmi, but it also hapens with a dell regular monitor via
displayport->dvi. i am using only a single monitor at a time always.

with the monitor it is less relevant because i (and mostly everyone) am
fine using it on the maximum resolution. But using a 4k tv, i would
rather to keep resolution at 720p.

i do not have an xorg.conf file.

the bug happens when setting the resolution via:
- xfce4-display-settings
- xrandr (gui tools or command line)
- setting resolution in a kde or gnome session, logging out, login on a
xcfe session and then turning monitor on and on

the monitor does support edid correctly.

if i select the checkbox "configure new displays when connected" then i
will have one instance of xfce4-display-settings for each time i turned
my tv on during that xfce session.

The xfce4-display-settings way should work (it does here). Any other method is
not relevant since Xfce has no way to know what you did.

You might want to check if the configuration is properly saved in xfconf:

xfconf-query -c displays -p /Default/HDMI1/Resolution
1920x1200

(assuming your HDMI output is called HDMI1, replace by the correct name).
