Subject: gnome-settings-daemon: failed cmd exectuion on gdm display
Date: Thu, 06 Oct 2016 15:36:08 +0530
Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Version: 3.22.0-1
Severity: normal

I don't know why it'd want to run a command, as user root, expecially
when I have my desktop session active. There are no visible side effects
to this failed attempt, but this does not look correct.

Actually, from a power savings perspective, this has substantial negative
impact. Is there no way to disable this ?

Thanks to Laurent for the hint on loginctl, I can see the process. Now the thing
is, this is not part of a service, in which case I'd have disabled it.

There should be way to disable processes, if need be.

Maybe the list of processes that get executed in a GDM session needs to be
limited.

Currently, it runs gnome-shell, which in turn picks in a bunch of foreign
elements apart from native gnome.

Take this example:
/usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome.session

This mentions not just the gnome shell, but also gnome-settings-daemon, which is
continuously firing the actual command to dim the light, but fails because it
does not have the privilege to.

This doesn't have a visible effect (otherwise the severity would have been much
higher) but for my power saving measures, this is a problem.

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
For the record, I've this exact problem on Asus Zenbook UX305LA.

As stated in [1] the issue seems to come from gnome-settings-daemon
trying to set backlight as root, which fails.

Log flood can be stopped with acpi_als blacklist adding

blacklist acpi_als

in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Cheers,
Jean Baptiste
