Package: libasound2
Version: 1.1.2
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Justification: breaks system for blind users [RC, stretch]

After an upgrade to the specified version, BRLTTY starts up with speech working
(brltty-espeak is using libao -> libasoun2), but speech stops working after
roughly a minute. The BRLTTY process is still running, but speech cannot be
brought back, only a restart of BRLTTY fixes this issue. All other playback of
sound using ALSA works fine. Since it is not related to any changes in BRLTTY
(tried several stable versions), the issue must be in libasound2. The provided
patch fixes the issue reliably for me.

It seems moderators are not reactive. I have subscribed to the list in

The patch seems to introduce another issue. Aplay does not terminate after
playback and keeps the handle to the file open as well. I use aplay for
notifications on my system, so ended up with no free file descriptors after a
while. This behaviour is not present in the unpatched version.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can do.

So I cancelled the upload. I think we have to wait for a response
from alsa-devel to Samuels post there.

suppose that we should wait for a response of the maintainer
Takashi Sakamoto mentioned. If that dosn't come tto mind we either
have to disable pthread (we can't forsee what breaks then) or really
 downgrade to 1.1.1.

Disabling pthread just drops the mutexes, without putting back the old
locking code...

Let's wait 2 more weeks and hope of a solid solution from
alsa-devel. I try to discuss this with Jordi (MIA at the moment) and
Luke within this bug, so cc'ed.

And the discussion shows that the issue really does seem to lie in
there. portaudio maintainers, could you include the upstream patch from

https://lists.columbia.edu/pipermail/portaudio/2016-August/000623.html

?

Without it, blind users using a screen reader have their screen reader
hang every few minutes, making the system basically unusable.

Thanks,

I have attached to this mail the upstream fix that got released
yesterday as RC. Could you please apply it?

This:

is still preventing all blind users using speech synthesis from being
able to do any kind of serious work with debian testing.
