Package: wnpp

Neither Steve nor I still have any interest in maintaining
systemd-shim. Debian's default init system is systemd, Ubuntu supports
nothing else any more (and does not even have systemd-shim any more),
upstart is gone from both Debian and Ubuntu, so the only use case for
it right now is running Debian with SysVinit (in particular, on
non-Linux flavors).

So this should be picked up by someone who is interested in keeping SysV init
support for desktops (i. e. which need logind or timedatectl) alive in Debian.
There are currently no release-critical bugs and the package is working
reasonably well for main use cases, but there *are* a few bugs worth looking
into.

The upstream branch is currently at <https://github.com/desrt/systemd-shim/>.
Allison isn't interested any more in this either, so I suggest that
the upstream repo gets mothballed and systemd-shim just becomes a
Debian-native package (I'm not aware of any other distro using it
anyway).

Note that systemd-shim currently uses cgmanager, which by itself is obsolete [1].

Package description:

  Description: shim for systemd
This package emulates the systemd function that are required to run
the systemd helpers without using the init service

Just a suggestion, but maybe ping a Devuan mailing list. If those guys
are interested in continuing to support sysvinit then maybe they would
be happy to take this.

I'd much prefer to see efforts within Debian that can benefit a wider
community than hacks patched on top that only benefit a smaller group.

Thanks,
Iain.

Good idea, I sent it to

(might take a bit to appear, I'm not subscribed).

Hi,

We don't use this package in Devuan as we're rebuilding packages to
remove the systemd dependencies. So there is no interest in this
package from the Devuan side either.

Thanks,
	Daniel

I'd be interested in becoming the sponsored maintainer of this
package. It seems like it would require a fairly low level of
attention. It looks like it's used by ~14,000 installations, so it
does seem like it should be maintained. I suppose I'd need a DD as
sponsor? I've asked the systemd mailing list and asked to join the
systemd project on alioth.

the best way to find a sponsor is by forking the git repo somewhere else,
show your packaging skills by fixing bugs and refactoring the packaging
(or whatever is needed), and then ask to adopt it.

We can't blindly sponsor stuff just because of somebody is interested, an
unmaintained package is better than a badly maintained one :)

I can't see your name/surname/ddpo page, so I can assume you don't maintain
any debian stuff right now?
