Subject: RFH: smokeping
Date: Wed, 18 May 2016 18:22:55 -0400
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal
I need help maintaining the smokeping package. I do not really use it
anymore and i'd be happy to help people to sponsor it. There's a bunch
of obscure bugs all over the place, and while I think the package
mostly works, it's just a wild guess since well, I'm not using it
right now.

Looks like a candidate for the Internet Measurement Packaging Team. (:

Would be happy to be a co-maintainer for this package.
If this sounds good I'll add you to the team and we can update the
maintainer/uploaders fields on the next upload. (:
Thanks,
Iain.

Hmm... I'm hesitant in joining yet another team here, too much mail. :)
But i'd be happy to share maintenance or even delegate responsability
completely if people are up to it.
Thanks!

By joining the team, I mainly meant giving you VCS commit access. If
you're not using the package much anymore then I probably wouldn't
expect you to be tracking the package too closely, but as you've
previously maintained it I might want to ask you questions and allow you
the ability to commit fixes for anything I'm not understanding.

Does this sound acceptable?

I'm fine with that!

All of the above is, feel free to move to shared maintenance and give me
access, it sounds like a great solution.
Thanks for the fast response!

Hi Antoine,
How would you prefer to get help? I'll try to do a bit of BTS cleanup,
but for code changes, is it fine to do direct VCS commits, or would you
prefer git pull requests?
I do use smokeping, so I'm happy to help as time allows.
regards,
iustin

Sorry, I didn't see the other comments in the bug. I've yesterday a
round of BTS cleanups.

Hi there!
I've been doing some work on the smokeping package in the past few
weeks/months with anarcat.
Namely,
* a new upstream release was packaged and sent to experimental, and
we're trying to get it into sid very soon.
* I've written and submitted a patch upstream in response to a bug
report in the BTS to make smokeping work better with newer versions of
FPing (3.16+). It should make it so that the FPing probes doen't mix up
IPv4 and IPv6 anymore with the recent versions of fping. This should
land in a package real soon (it was merged upstream today)
Future work that I intend to do is to get rid of as many lintian errors
as possible, and then start working on the currently present bug reports
in the BTS (from the easiest first).
It is an invaluable learning experience for me since I'm new to debian
packaging.
Anarcat has marked myself as package maintainer, and I intend to
continue work on the package. However, I'm not closing the door to
collaboration with the Internet Measurement Packaging Team as was
suggested by Iain.
For now, pull requests on the git repository in salsa would be great,
until I can feel more confident about how the package is holding things
together.
Cheers!

By the way, was there any followup on this? I haven't talked with
LeLutin, but I'm sure the extra help wouldn't be refused. :)

Yeah, and thank you for that! :)

Actually, it was uploaded to sid three days ago, so if all goes well it
should be in buster by the end of week.

This is already in 2.7.2-2, if i recall correctly, see also #905752.

Awesome! Note that some of those bug reports cover rather special corner
cases you might not have or might find difficult to deploy, namely
master/slave setups or using Smokeping as a more generic monitoring
system (à la Nagios, say). My approach, thus far, with the package, has
been to fix the stuff I use and accept patches for the rest, but not
necessarily go crazy in trying to fix the more exotic use cases.

Hi Gabriel and Antoine!
When I read the wnpp report today I noticed that this bug is still
open. Are you looking for more help with smokeping or can this bug be
closed?
Cheers,

I guess we might be able to close this now that Lelutin has picked it up
and is marked as a maintainer.
Thanks gab! :)
