Today's samba security update now pulls in the samba server package on
all client machines where smbclient or fusesmb is installed:

Worked fine for me.

This one looks broken: All client systems that have smbclient or fusesmb
installed pull the server package "samba" in via the following
(partially new) dependencies:

smbclient -> samba-libs -> samba
(multiple packages, e.g. fusesmb) -> samba-common-bin -> samba

Looks like this:

# apt upgrade --no-install-recommends
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libhdb9-heimdal samba samba-dsdb-modules tdb-tools
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libldb1 libsmbclient python-ldb python-samba samba-common samba-common-bin samba-libs smbclient
8 upgraded, 4 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 9,015 kB of archives.
After this operation, 14.1 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] n
Abort.

Is this really on purpose? I don't expect anyone wants the samba server
package installed only to be able to connect to one.

P.S.: This one only affects Jessie. Neither Wheezy nor Sid are affected.

Since today's update on Jessie, the samba server installed itself and is
now running on my computer.

I can't remove it as it will also remove Gnome, why?

You will need to downgrade smbclient, samba-libs, samba-common,
samba-common-bin, python-samba, libsmbclient and possibly others back
to 2:4.1.17+dfsg-2+deb8u2. Then you can remove samba again.

I note that these relations are not present in the source package.
After running a build, I see that ${shlibs:Depends} is the cause.

Looking at the the files and their dependencies, here are the culprits:

debian/samba/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/samba/libprocess-model.so.0
debian/samba/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/samba/libsmbd-base.so.0

They need to be moved into the samba-libs package.

Here is the analysis I used (irrelevant output stripped):

Current test packages for (amd64) are on
https://people.debian.org/~carnil/tmp/samba/jessie/ with the libraries
moved to the correct samba-libs instead of samba.

Thanks for the prompt fix! Testing them right now on my laptop as well
as on one BackupPC server. (BackupPC has a dependency on smbclient for
backing up Windows machines.)

Worked fine on all six machines I've deployed it via reprepro so far.

unattended_upgrades installed (next to samba) about 10 to 20 other
unwanted packages on about 80 hosts in my network. The upgrade to
the fixed version did not remove these unwanted packages again.

Please advice how to identify and remove these packages.

Thanx in advance

You can first purge the samba package:

dpkg --purge samba

Then you can use deborphan to indentify unwanted packages.

# deborphan
libhdb9-heimdal
libck-connector0
libgssapi3-heimdal
samba-dsdb-modules
# dpkg --purge `deborphan`

You need to do this several times because removing some packages make
more packages to be "orphanable".

If you do this on a single machine, step by step, you will be able to
construct a list of unwanted packages, and then execute a command like
this on the other 79 machines, or even in all machines, as removing
an already removed package should be harmless:

dpkg --purge samba libhdb9-heimdal libck-connector0 [...]

where [...] represents the complete list.

If you are using ansible, that would be something like this:

ansible myservers -a "dpkg --purge package1 package2 [...]"

Hope this helps.

Hi.

My previous procedure using deborphan isn't perfect. The packages
samba-common and samba-common-bin, for example, are not shown by
deborphan with default options.

Another strategy would be to remove "all but actually wanted packages".

The "debfoster" package will help you to build a list of "really
wanted packages".

Thanks.

You can also do that in one simple call:

  aptitude purge samba

Aptitude removes no more used packages by default in the same run (if
they were properly marked as automatically installed and neither
recommended nor suggested by another installed package).

I think you underestimate the problem. The next unattended
upgrade (using the 2nd set of new samba 4.2 packages) ran
into a dependency problem:

That's a known issue and probably will be fixed with a further
regression update.

> This won't go away.

In another mail to this bug report, someone said, "apt-get install -f"
fixed it for him.

dpkg doesn't know anything about an "automatically installed" flag.
Only apt, aptitude and friends do.

I know. This is Bug #821002, which is also serious and should be fixed soon.
If you still want to work around the problem and not wait for +deb8u3,
you could maybe:

dpkg --purge --force-depends samba
apt-get -f install

This will probably install samba (again) and samba-libs version +deb8u2,
but this time without errors.

After that you can use aptitude, deborphan, debfoster, or whatever
work best in your case.
