Subject: less not any more registered as "pager" alternative
Date: Fri, 22 Jan 2016 13:24:19 +1300
Package: less
Version: 481-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have re-installed my debian testing desktop from scratch and wondered why I have
difficulties to navigate the manual pages. It uses /usr/bin/pager which is
managed by the alternatives system. So I tried to establish my preferred choice:

# sudo update-alteratives --config pager

doesn't feature less. So I conclude the package less does not register with the
alternatives system correctly.

Please fix this. If less is considered too buggy to be default, please decrease
its priority appropriately.

Many thanks (right now in busy sysadmin mode, otherwise there would be a patch, sorry)

Package: less
Version: 481-2
Followup-For: Bug #812252

Hello,

I guess the culprit is that the source package has both debian/postinst and
debian/less.postinst. dpkg-buildpackage picks up the latter, but the logic
to register the alternative for pager is in the former only. Probably
this is related to #694051 and #767928.

Best regards
Uwe

And the hotfix is

 sudo update-alternatives --quiet --install /usr/bin/pager pager \
             /bin/less 77 --slave /usr/share/man/man1/pager.1.gz \
             pager.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/less.1.gz

Best regards
Uwe

Hi,

I've created a patch which moves the update-alternatives commands to the
correct scripts and which also implements the strategy mentiones in
message 5 of bug #694051. Applying it to the source directory should
solve all problems related to these two bugs.

Cheers,
Frederik

Control: tags 812252 pending

Dear maintainer,

I've prepared an NMU for less (versioned as 481-2.1) and uploaded it to
DELAYED/5. Please feel free to tell me if I should delay it longer.

This patch is similar in intent to that provided by Frederik Möllers
four weeks ago, but I did the reconciliation the other way round (i.e.
moving the contents of debian/less.postinst into debian/postinst etc.
rather than vice versa), since the package-name-less files are
longer-standing and since this resulted in a much shorter and
easier-to-read patch.

I care about this because I'm starting to get reports about this
directed to me as man-db maintainer, and it obviously makes a difference
to how usable man(1) appears to be out of the box.

Regards,
