I'm assuming you are forcing the installation of packages somehow?
Because apt-get would normally warn that installing the new systemd and
udev packages would conflict with ifupdown.

There is a small transition going on where some files are moved from the
systemd and udev packages into the ifupdown package. In a few days, all
mirrors should have the new versions of all three packages which can be
coinstalled. Until then, just wait and don't force apt-get to install
packages that it knows won't work together.

No way! I even used aptitude "safe-upgrade"!

I wouldn't be forcing anything and still sending a bug report.

Maybe it is an aptitude bug then?

Oh, that's very weird then!

Hm, well I don't think it should have tried to do the upgrade in the
first place, as installing udev 228-3 clearly conflicts with ifupdown
0.8.4. But did it say it would also upgrade ifupdown to 0.8.5? If not,
then it looks like a bug in aptitude. But maybe it really is (also) a
problem with udev's prerm script. So let's see what happens with
809744.

This only happens if you upgrade to ifupdown 0.8.5 and udev 228-3
simultaneously. Due to the mutual Breaks: apt (temporarily)
deconfigures the old udev, which triggers this old udev prerm bug.

> But maybe it really is (also) a problem with udev's prerm script.

It is indeed. It got fixed in 228-3, but we can't retroactively fix
the old one. Michael's idea was to drop the Breaks: from ifupdown and
only keep the Replaces:, which will avoid deconfiguring udev and thus
avoid running into this old prerm bug. Upgrades will be fine with
that, it will just not work correctly with partial downgrades. But we
don't support these anyway.

Unfortunately I don't have a better idea either. Guus, would you be
okay with dropping the Breaks: to udev again?

Thanks,

Martin

Hm, I thought dpkg would try the prerm script from the new package if
the one from the old one failed?

As far as I can see, not for "deconfigure":

  https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#s-mscriptsinstact

the error unwinding is to call the old version's postinst, which
doesn't help us.

But maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks,

Ok, the actual problem is udev's prerm script, but it might be that the
only way to resolve that is to remove the Breaks: udev (<< 228-3~) dependency from ifupdown. I've attached a new version of ifupdown, can you check if doing this works:

dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*228-3* ifupdown_0.8.6~1_i386.deb

If it complains about not deconfiguring packages, run this command:

dpkg -B -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*228-3* ifupdown_0.8.6~1_i386.deb

Let me know if that works without errors.

You know I am not the best person to test these packages.

If I mess up my Internet connection due to this, it is a long way to
town to download a fix.

Also nobody else uses Linux for miles around.

Anyway please also fix
" cannot access archive: No such file or directory"

Wait,

That fixed it.

Crazy.

Ah, you should specify the right path to where you put the ifupdown
0.8.6~1 package I sent you in the email ;). So:

dpkg -B -i /var/cache/apt/archives/*228-3* /path/to/ifupdown_0.8.6~1_i386.deb

Can you try that command again?
