Hi,
your package mysql-server-5.6 declares a dependency on the
initscripts package.
Please check, if this dependency is actually needed and remove it
otherwise. On a system using systemd, the initscripts package is no
longer required. Removing the dependency from your package will allow
users to remove the initscripts package from their system.
Regards, Michael

It seems that the dependency is a leftover from the /run transition.
The version was dropped without explanation when updating to 5.6 from
5.5[1], probably because the version was satisfied in stable already.
Please drop the dependency both here and in 5.5.

Thanks for doing that research. We're working on 5.7 at the moment, and
I've dropped the dependency in my local branch but not pushed it yet. So
this should get fixed in testing and unstable soon, when we upload 5.7.
5.5 is pending removal (#811158) so we won't fix it there. I presume
this isn't severe enough to justify fixing in stable?

Excellent! I don't know how many versions you plan to keep for
stretch, if 5.6 is to be part of it, please remember to fix it there
as well.

No, there is no point in fixing in stable. A key part of the
dependency removal needed a change in update-rc.d that will not be
backported.

We expect to ship only one version, so hopefully 5.7 and not 5.6.

Just asked Robie on IRC and he pushed the change:
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/mysql-5.7.git/commit/debian/control?id=c0fe97a83
(for 5.7, 5.6 will be removed)
Thanks,

Hm, that repository is gone.
What's the state of this bug report? Seeing that 5.6 still got updates
after this bug report was filed, maybe it makes sense to also include
the fix in 5.6, just in case.
Given the above, I'm removing the pending tag for now.

Michael

We unified the repository into
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/mysql.git/log/, yesterday which
does still contain the fix.

We're expecting to upload 5.7 to experimental very soon now. If somebody
wants to cherry-pick this to 5.6 and upload, I have no particular
objection (though please push to VCS too; we haven't moved 5.6 into the
unified repo yet, so it'd be mysql-5.6.git).

Ah, k. Missed that. Martin put the pending tag back.

I'd be happy to make an NMU for mysql-5.6, simply because I have it
installed on my system and would like to see the dependency go as soon
as possible. Since I don't have commit access to pkg-mysql though, I can
only send you a debdiff. Would that be fine?

Michael

If you need quick fixes, then upload current mysql-5.6 with these commits added:
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/mysql.git/commit/?id=526dbaff5888344c35e1be413fabe3ea7b186afc
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-mysql/mysql.git/commit/?id=65f1a907b695fcfed8e245e733709ed0289cdf7b
Ideally all work would be gone using the team's git repositories. Do
you plan to contribute to MySQL/MariaDB packaging in the future too?
In that case I could add you to the team, you are a DD after all.

I appreciate the offer, but I have to decline because there's already
too much on my plane. I basically just want a fix for mysql-5.6 in
unstable, so I'd keep the diff as minimal as possible. I can add the
above two commit if you want (assuming they can easily be
cherry-picked). Will have a look.
