I intend to orphan the drush package.
The package description is:
drush is a command line shell and Unix scripting interface for
Drupal, a veritable Swiss Army knife designed to make life easier for
Drupal power users who spend a lot of time hacking away at the
command prompt.
.
Drush core ships with lots of useful commands for interacting with code
like modules/themes/profiles. Similarly, it runs update.php, executes
sql queries and DB migrations, and misc utilities like run cron or clear
cache.
I am using Drupal less and less unfortunately, and Drush development
has changed radically since I built this package. I am not sure how to
package this thing anymore, given all the composer stuff that was
thrown in.

Pretty much. Upstream has basically rewrote the whole distribution
mechanism to depend on Composer, which made it very hard to package new
versions, as composer isn't itself packaged in Debian (or wasn't, last i
checked):
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=714118
I have therefore orphaned the package:
https://bugs.debian.org/798500
I do not use drush anymore, either. You are welcome, of course, to take
over the package! :)

So am I understand correctly that Composer package will be in repository
soon?

I am just blind user of apt-get.
But it will be much more possible to find somebody if there will be some
guide how to pack Composer packages to deb clearly.
Including solution for other dependencies what are only in Composer’s
repository and how to make packages „system-global” not „user-global” (most
„global” option Composer knows).

Hi,
as i have mentionned previously in this bug:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=798500
I have "orphaned" the Debian package, which means I no longer maintain
it.
The homepage for the package is here:
https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/drush
There you can find the git repository for the Debian package:
http://git.debian.org/git/collab-maint/drush.git
The first step to update the package will be to fix the issues with the
new Composer deployment that Drush uses. It looks like Composer is now
in Debian, but I am not sure how to package composer tools in Debian
now.
Maybe the Debian PHP team could help:
https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/DebianPHPGroup
Once there's a package to be uploaded (or even before, actually), the
package adoption procedure should be followed here:
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/ch05.en.html#adopting
I'd be glad to see other people take up Drush packaging! It's a bit of a
challenge because web apps move so fast, but there is certainly demand
for it, as I regularly get requests for the package to be updated. :)
Good luck!

Hello Antoine,
I use drush for my Drupal setups and have a dependency on it. I see
that the version in Debian is 5.x, where as on the upstream page, even
6.x is marked EOL. So I guess the Debian one has no support from anyone
other than Debian ?

I'll see if I can pick it up. I've been just a mere user of drush so
far.
One question for you. Drush upstream seems to be well aligned with
Drupal releases. With the current 8.x release, does it work with older
drush/drupal versions ?
I mean Drush 5.x working with Drupal 8.x and vice versa ?
If it does, what are the usual complications.

Hi,
In #823767, I have requested from the FTP-masters that Drush be removed
from Debian. In the ~9 months since it was orphaned, no one stepped up
to start maintaining the Drush package, let alone update it to a current
version. There was some movement on the Ubuntu side of things (also in
CC), but it seems it didn't end up going anywhere.
It seems clear to me no one is available to do that task and having an
outdated version of Drush in Debian is hurting both projects for no good
reason. At least that is the constant feedback I receive, both privately
and through the above bug reports.
So unless someone steps up *now* to tell the FTP-masters to stop, it
will be removed as soon as they take a look at bug #823767.
Thanks for your attention, and sorry for the wide {B,}CC.
