Subject: openjdk-8-jre: freemind usually crashes or hangs at startup with gtk look and feel
Date: Sun, 06 Sep 2015 13:35:19 +1200
Package: openjdk-8-jre
Version: 8u66-b01-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

since upgrade of openjdk-8-jre:amd64 (8u66-b01-1, 8u66-b01-2), freemind with
GTK L&F crashes at startup with:

$ freemind
Checking Java Version...
java: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.0.

or hangs with a broken splash screen (requiring "killall -9 java") and:

$ freemind
Checking Java Version...

or fails to set L&F with:

$ freemind
Checking Java Version...

STDERR: Unable to set Look & Feel.
[... followed by normal startup ...]

This bug also affects openjdk-7-jre 7u85-2.6.1-2. Looks like a thread race
condition. One change that might be responsible is the re-enabling of ATK for
both openjdk-7 and openjdk-8. Oracle JDK 8 works fine. Workaround is to disable
GTK L&F.

Steps to reproduce:

(1) Move your ~/.freemind out of the way to make a fresh one
(2) Start freemind and select Tools / Preferences / Appearance then select GTK
Look and Feel, Save then close the application. This will create your .freemind
directory.
(4) Start freemind at the command line several times to see various failures.

I am using XFCE with accessibility disabled.

Kind regards,
Ben.

See also #798214 (openjdk-7-jre: atk bridge causes segfault starting
freemind with gtk look and feel) which I have reported separately
because the failure is different (segfault) and it can be reproduced
every time. The stack track evidence implicates atk.

Apologies for the duplicate report but I do not know of any way to
report a bug for both openjdk-7 and openjdk-8. As noted above, the
symptoms and reproducibility differ as well.

Thanks very much, Samuel. I can confirm that with this line commented
out, freemind works properly with gtk look and feel on openjdk-7
(Bug#798214).

I can also confirm that with the line in
/etc/java-8-openjdk/accessibility.properties commented out, freemind
works properly with gtk look and feel on openjdk-8 (Bug#798131).

Kind regards,

Subject: This bug affects netbeans startup

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Thanks so much Samuel Thibault - I have been trying to get netbeans to
start properly on my machine since yesterday before coming to this bug via
jstack inspection. With recent updates to Ubuntu both openjdk-8 and
openjdk-7 caused netbeans to freeze within the first 30 seconds of
starting. This only happened over local X so I was working around the
problem with ssh tunneling which had its own problems. Commenting out the
assistive.technologies line solved the problem for me. Sorry, I know at
least the former of these isn't a Debian version number but
both 7u91-2.6.3-0ubuntu0.1 and 8u66-b17-1 were affected for me. I have
libatk 2.16.0-2build1 installed although I believe I have all universal
access controls switched off.
