Dear Maintainer,

the cursor's colour and brightness are not adjusted by redshift, which make it
annoyingly bright at night.

I haven't noticed that yet in my usage so far. Can you provide me steps
to reproduce ?

I did not set anything special and it happens consistently for me.

Attached is a picture of the phenomena. With the bare eye it is more
noticeable.

I'm using a radeon hd 7950 with the libre drivers, and also the package
firmware‑linux‑nonfree to enable 3d acceleration — maybe that is
relevant.

I have no clue but my guess is that that may be the problem. All I can
add is that on my ultrabook, with Intel HD, I do not see the problem you
have mentioned.

To narrow it down, you may want to verify the same on another machine,
or with another chipset.

The issue does not occur when using the intel GPU.

Does the randr method take care of hardware cursors?

This is a known upstream limitation: hardware cursor is not affected by
redshift (at least with randr method, the default).
It is actually stated on the official website:
http://jonls.dk/redshift/
(search for "Known bugs and limitations")

A workaround would be to use software cursor, here is what I have to add
to the "Device" section of my xorg.conf to achieve this ('radeon' driver):

Option "SWCursor" "on"

But a real fix would be nice, seeing as some applications do not behave
as intended with software cursor enabled.

I was able to successfully apply this workaround on a fully updated
Debian Sid with redshift version 1.11-1 on the same machine which I
reported this bug from. To do so, I did the following as root:

1. create the directory /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
2. create the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/software_cursor.conf
   with the following content:

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Screen 0"
	Driver "radeon"
	Option "SWCursor" "true"
EndSection

3. restart the computer

Depending on system configuration the content of the file in step 2
might need to be adapted. Especially if you use a different graphics
card than mine (AMD Radeon HD 7950), you might need to adapt the driver
option in line 3.

It is sad that to use display color adpation without annoyingly bright
cursors on Debian on a standard desktop machine in 2017 still needs
workarounds which require advanced knowledge of the operating system
and time investment :(

I checked redshift (1.12-2) on sid and the bug didn't occur. Fixed.
