Hi,
please update the package in unstable to 2.0.3, or the (AFAIK) soon to
be released 2.0.4. I have some software here that requires 2.0.3 or
newer unfortunately.
Thanks!

I seem to remember that 2.0.3 didn't introduce any interesting changes,
other than fixes or support for other OSs (Windows or Mac, cannot
remember), which is the reason why I never attempted to package that
version. What's the feature that you need that requires 2.0.3? Or is
it perhaps some VCS changes after 2.0.3?
Since I didn't think that 2.0.3 were interesting I was hoping (and
waiting for many months, or year+ now) that they release 2.0.4 at some
point, so we can package a "known milestone", and so we don't have to
cherry pick fixes that people request us from time to time.
For doing this cherry-picking, in the past the Debian packages
introduced ABI changes or behaviours that people depended upon, or wrong
patches that later were reverted without us noticing for years... so I
was trying to avoid this now.
In any case, packaging 2.0.3 at this point (19 months after) doesn't
look like a very good option to me. I don't know why upstream people
are so reluctant to release 2.0.4 :-/
Cheers.

The Haskell sdl2 bindings require 2.0.3 for some unspecified reasons, explicitly stating the .3 on the website. No idea what exactly :)

From today's version of the file:
https://hg.libsdl.org/SDL/file/25d1e99080ce/WhatsNew.txt
there's no mention of Haskell, but specifically, the changes that you
can see in 2.0.3 w.r.t. .2 is nothing relevant. There are lots of
fixes or added support for WinRT, which are not listed, but also
shouldn't be relevant for any bindings.
So I assume that they mention that in the website because it's simply
the version that it was current at the time that they wrote this, or
because 2.0.0 or .1 had some problems, or because of problems in other
platforms that they use, not Linux.
In short, I think that you should be able to use 2.0.2 safely, even if
the project claims otherwise.
And in general... yes, I would like to update the code since long ago,
but updating to 2.0.3 at this point doesn't make much sense, and I
already explained about the problems when chasing VCS releases, that
probably you are also aware of. But it will be done as soon as they
decide to release a new version.
Cheers.

Yeah and patch their build system. Even if it's just for OSX/Windows
specific changes, I'd expect a similar situation in other software
where people either need to patch build systems or update their SDL
version.
FWIW, they even describe there how to update SDL on Ubuntu. And Ubuntu
also had 2.0.2 since almost forever. So there's probably a reason.

I just have my own version of the package since a while now, simple
uupdate and rebuild. Works for me.
