Subject: fails to boot with a dracut generated initramfs
Date: Tue, 02 Jun 2015 20:43:40 +0300
Package: systemd
Version: 220-1
Severity: grave

The new upload to unstable broke booting with dracut. The initramfs attempts
to run /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-fsck to fsck the rootfs. Since on Debian (and
in the initramfs) this binary is actually at /lib/systemd/systemd-fsck this
fails, thus stopping the boot and dropping me into the emergency shell. It is
possible to symlink those paths together and restart the failing unit (iirc
systemd-fsck-root.service), which succeeds. However if I follow the
instructions and simply exit the emergency shell bootup does not continue
(nothing happens).

The binary has always been named /lib/systemd/systemd-fsck and hasn't
changed between v215 and v220, so I doubt this is really the issue here.

I wonder if this is the addition of /lib/systemd/systemd-fsckd, a
component which is not shipped by systemd upstream and is responsible
for fsck progress reporting.
Could you rebuild your dracut initramfs and include
/lib/systemd/systemd-fsckd
/lib/systemd/system/systemd-fsckd.socket
/lib/systemd/system/systemd-fsckd.service

and see if that makes a difference.

When you're dropped into the emergency shell, you should be able to get
a journalctl -alb dump. Please attach that to the bug report.

Thanks
Michael

Quick followup here. This regression is most likely caused by [1], where
systemd now generates a systemd-fsck-root.service in the initramfs,
which overrides the statically shipped fsck units. This generated unit
uses a hard-coded path to /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-fsck.
There was a followup fix [2], which replaces the hard-coded path.

Arto wanted to test this patch. If successful, we will cherry-pick that
commit for the next upload.

This looks correct and sensible anyway, at least necessary for this
bug, so I cherry-picked this one for now. It might not be sufficient
yet of course, so Arto, please test this patch and report back here.

If it's more convenient for you, I put a source package with that fix
here: https://people.debian.org/~mpitt/tmp/systemd_220-4pitti1.dsc

Thanks,

Martin

I tested the patch, it is indeed sufficient to fix the bug. Thanks for
the quick fix.

Closes: 787256 787258 787553
Changes:
 systemd (220-5) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   * debian/README.source: Upstream repository moved to github, adjust
     cherry-picking instructions accordingly.
   * debian/control: Replace obsolete Python2 version header with
     X-Python3-Version.
   * dracut: Fix path to systemd-fsck. (Closes: #787553)
   * Ignore test failures during build if /etc/machine-id is missing (which is
the case in a few buildd chroots still). (Closes: #787258)
   * debian/udev.README.Debian: Move network interface hotplug documentation
into separate section. Point out that "lo" does not need to be configured
     in ifupdown under systemd.
   * debian/udev.README.Debian: Document net.ifnames, and how to write udev
     rules for custom network names.
   * Add debian/extra/01-mac-for-usb.link: Use MAC based names for network
interfaces which are (directly or indirectly) on USB. Path based names
are inadequate for dynamic buses like USB.
   * Fix another escape parsing regression in Exec*= lines. (Closes: #787256)
   * Disable EFI support for udeb build.
   * Refine detection of touch screen devices.
