Package: pbuilder

Hi,
with the recent update to dpkg-dev 1.18.0 in unstable, pbuilder fails to
build packages for me. This is apparently because dpkg-buildpackage -S
fails now if build-dependencies are not satisfied.
One point of using pbuilder is to be able to not pollute the host system
with a lot of build-dependencies for various packages, since they'll
only be installed in a chroot.
I don't know if the behavior should actually be reverted in
dpkg-buildpackage or something changed in pbuilder, but if the
assumption doesn't stand anymore, it really needs to be advertised more.
Regards,

Hi Yves-Alexis!
I ran into the same problem and I think the only real solution is
switching over to sbuild which most Debian people and buildds use
anyway. It's also faster (especially with btrfs snapshots and easier
to set up.
pbuilder always had the problems with certain pre-dependencies which
required certain debhelper packages to be installed outside the chroot
for the package build to work. It also has long-standing issues like
this one [1] which prevents pbuilder to properly work with gbp.
Oh, and maybe this bug should be bumped to severity serious as
currently pbuilder is completely unusable.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi you two,
cowbuilder continues to work for me (and it’s pretty much pbuilder).
I would ask you, Adrian, to refrain from shooting out “I think the
only real solution is” so quickly.
The change in dpkg-buildpackage is annoying, but has been forewarned
since etch or thereabouts already, and I’ve already got a bloody nose
with one package requiring stuff from its B-D to create the source
package (due to debian/rules clean). But this likely only affects
pdebuild, not pbuilder itself.
The fix is easy of course: don’t use pdebuild, dpkg-buildpackage -S -d
then run the .dsc that results in with pbuilder.

Yet you do the same two paragraphs later ;). But again, there are more
issues with pbuilder. I have had many packages where I had to install
certain debhelper packages on the host system outside the chroot before
I was able to build the package. This doesn't look like a very clean
solution to me.
Furthermore, using sbuild is just way more flexible and with btrfs
snapshots, it's unbeatenly fast, really :).

Yeah, but what's the point about using pbuilder then. I don't see
anything where it beats sbuild and your only argument seems to be again
"Don't fix it, because it's old and I have used it for years" (TM) ;).
I'd be happy to be enlightened about this though.

Agreed. Especially since this is a bug against pbuilder, not sbuild. I'm
not interested in trolling for one solution or another, this is not the
correct place for that.

Having to manually build the source package before is pretty painful,
especially when you actually use pbuilder from another tool (like
svn-buildpackage).
In the end, I've added -s to DEBBBUILDOPTS in .pbuilderrc, which fixes
the problem for me.

It’s the Debian way to do things.
Yves-Alexis Perez dixit:
>Having to manually build the source package before is pretty painful,
Yes, but… see above.
However, I can see how we could work around this: tell pbuilder
(and cowbuilder) that a directory argument is okay as well, then
let them, in those cases, gather the information they normally
get from the .dsc from $1/debian/control.
When I’m bored (or get sufficient incentive to do it), and if
one of you is doing the NMU (or the maintainer wakes up), I might
even hack this; I roughly understand how pbuilder works, and how
this could work. I agree it’s a nice-to-have thing, I just accept
this isn’t how this has traditionally worked in Debian.

Indeed, this is #786690 in pdebuild. It is caused by a change
introduced in dpkg 1.18.0, which now lets "dpkg-buildpackage -S"
fail if build-dependencies are missing. It can be fixed by the little
patch against pdebuild provided by henrich in #786690.
I am raising the severity of this bug, because without this fix
pbuilder and thus "gbp buildpackage --git-pbuilder" cannot be used as
intended anymore.

+ Parametrize the build directory using the new conf option BUILDDIR.
* Stop providing empty /usr/share/doc/pbuilder/examples/workaround
* Add support for hurd. Closes: #753801, #755441
Thanks to Gabriele Giacone for the patch.
* pbuilder-modules:
+ Stop downloading translations of package descriptions. They are a waste
of bandwidth and time, really useless in a build chroots. Thanks to
Paul Wise <pabs@debian.org> for the suggestion. Closes: #749961
+ Copy /etc/mailname from the host, instead of writing it after the
`hostname -f` output. Closes: #637627
+ Make BUILDDIR available to hooks, so they can know where the source and
the built packages are.
+ Add a symlink from /tmp/buildd to the current BUILDD to avoid too many
breakages. This change will go away someday, so please update your
scripts to use BUILDDIR. The link will be created only if /tmp/buildd is
an empty directory (what everybody should have now) or a non-existing
(new chroot created from this version).
Thanks to Helmut for the idea.
* documentation:
+ ex/D65various-compiler-support: manage the different version of clang-X.Y
Thanks to Sylvestre Ledru for the patch. Closes: #748251
+ Use BUILDDIR instead of hardcoding /tmp/buildd on hooks examples.
+ pbuilder.8: remove architecture examples for --architecture. It simply
supports whatever debootstrap support, no point in listing them.
Thanks to Reiner Herrmann for poiting this out.
+ Explain that the documentation is work in progress and as such incomplete
and outdated.
+ Finish German translation and refresh translations files.
