Package: systemd
Version: 215-17
Severity: normal
Hey.
I was running some tests on the differences between a systemd
that was kept constantly at sid level and such that was upgraded
from wheezy to jessie.
During that I've noticed that /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid have
entries like the following on the sid system:
systemd-timesync:165536:65536
systemd-network:231072:65536
systemd-resolve:296608:65536
systemd-bus-proxy:362144:65536
whereas the jessie system doesn't have.
Both run obviously with systemd and since the version of systemd
is the same in jessie and sid I'd have assumed that the files
would have either both these entries or neither of them.
So maybe this is either a case of:
- something's missing in jessie (why?)
or
- something's to much in my sid installation (which would then smell
after legacy stuff from an intermediate version that hasn't been
cleaned up properly.
In any cases, this is the pointer for you maintainers, since you have
probably a better clue than I do :-)
Cheers,
Chris.

You should direct those questions to the adduser maintainer.
Those files are not managed by systemd.

Then it's probably better to reassign than to close, isn't it?!

Or rather the passwd maintainers:
[ Micah Anderson ]
* added debian/patches/userns to enable use of subuids, plus some bugfix»
patches on top of them, patches from Eric Biederman, pulled from
Ubuntu. Closes: #739981
* Allow LXC devices (lxc/console, lxc/tty[1234]) in securetty.linux
* Update documentation of UMASK: Explain that USERGROUPS_ENAB will modify
this default for UPGs. (Closes: #583971)
* login.postinst: install a default /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid
* fix installation of setuid/setgid/newuidmap/newgid/map man pages
Anyway, not systemd specific.

Well normally we try to keep Debian clean and consistent , which is why
we remove legacy config files, do away with users/groups on purge etc.

The reason for these discrepancies is probably simply that passwd/login
were upgraded after systemd as it seems.
Which leaves however the question open:
Shouldn't there be some code or whatsoever to add sub[u|g]id entries for
legacy users?
And if this isn't needed anyway,... why having it?
Cheers,
Chris

There should be code in usermod to add subuid and subgid entries to
existing users. There certainly was at the time the code was written.
If the upgrade process uses that functionality I leave up to the
packagers.
The functionality is very useful in combination with newuidmap and and
newgidmap for the creation of unprivileged containers. If you are not
using those there is not much point. So it seems reasonable to be a
something that can be set per system.
Not changing existing users sounds like a good default as it does not
break existing assumptions. Then for the people who care you can just
use usermod and add those ids.
Eric

Package: passwd
Version: 1:4.2-3
--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Currently in my system none of the user accounts have subuids, because they
were created before subuid support was added, but a bunch of system accounts
do have them despite being really unlikely to ever need them.
So I think there are two changes to consider:
- Don't create subuids for system users (the 100-999 range) unless explicitly
requested. Or is this adduser issue?
It is not really interfering with anything, but it is unnecessarily using
up the subuid space and for reliability it is better to force the packages
that need them to ask for them explicitly.
- Create subuids for real users (the 1000-60000 range) that don't have them,
once during upgrade.
The users can add the subuids for them if they want, but:
- There does not seem to be a command to just “give me the default
subuid+subgid range”, so the user has to come up with the right magic
incantation and
- This will lead to some tools just working on new installations and not
working on older installations that have been upgraded for some time, which
may lead to confusion and the reason may not be immediately obvious.
Thanks,
Jan
