And what does /var/log/apt-cacher-ng/apt-cacher.err contain?

a) jeez, why? you will mess up your file permissions when you call it
like this running as root or as another user with too many permissions
b) wrap this through "sudo -u apt-cacher-ng" (from root shell)
c) add other parameters from the service file, see
/lib/systemd/system/apt-cacher-ng.service for details.
Regards,
Eduard.

The recent versions add more verbosity in case of failures. Please test
again. And/or send the information requested above.

Hi,
Just reporting my encounter with:
Nov 22 23:00:12 dussel apt-cacher-ng[7362]: Check the permissions of /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng!
Nov 22 23:00:12 dussel systemd[1]: apt-cacher-ng.service: main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Nov 22 23:00:12 dussel systemd[1]: Failed to start Apt-Cacher NG software download proxy.
-- Subject: Unit apt-cacher-ng.service has failed
My problem was that /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng was from user root,
not from apt-cacher-ng user.
Fixed by manual removing /var/cache/apt-cacher-ng and let
dpkg -i
it create.

This isn't normal. Was this a fresh system? Maybe somebody did run it
the first time as root and via init system?

Hello.
I have the same behavior with Debian Testing (SparkyLinux)
systemd[1]: apt-cacher-ng.service: Main process exited, code=exited,
status=1/FAILURE
systemd[1]: Failed to start Apt-Cacher NG software download proxy.
I tried with versions: 0.8.0-3, 0.8.8-1~bpo8+1, 0.8.9-1, 0.9.0-1 and
always the same.
Erasing cache folder doesn't work for me as well trying to start
manually the daemon.
Please, let me know how can help you find the problem.

journalctl has a system problem with catching the correct error logs
from syslog if the process dies too quickly. Therefore you could run
journalctl and look for related errors from all contexts.
Maybe there is something like this? "Problem creating log files.
Check permissions of the log directory, "
The next thing would be something like:
become root
su -s /bin/sh -c "strace /usr/sbin/apt-cacher-ng -c /etc/apt-cacher-ng ForeGround=1" apt-cacher-ng
And then report the last lines before the executable dies.
Best regards,
Eduard.

So it tried four times and your private DNS is still failing.
Please fix the DNS server!
Maybe it was shut down for upgrade as well?
Another thing, it DID tell the reason to systemd. Wasn't there a message in
systemctl status output?

Eduard.

Well, this machine does not have any DNS at all (atm), as I only use
/etc/hosts in my privat network. Once it is (fully) installed, it will
get direct internet and DNS access. I wasn't aware that DNS is needed
(and thought IP numbers did as well).
So I postpone installing apt-cacher-ng for the moment and will retry
later with DNS available.

That's interesting. What it does is basically taking the strings and
throwing them at getaddrinfo(3) and using it's output to bind the
service on that hosts. What getaddrinfo does is blackbox from my POV.
Can you please reveal the relevant config files (acng.conf or similar,
host.conf, etc.)?
I have seen a similar report from Ubuntu recently... probably this needs
to be reassigned to glibc ASAP.
Regards,
Eduard.

host.conf has not been modified by me, it reads:
root@samd:/# cat /etc/host.conf
multi on
I attached acng.conf.
If you need further files please let me know.

That is probably beyond my knowledge[1], could you reassign? I'm willing
to test and provide information, no problem on that.

[1] Not the commands to reassign, but finding the right package and

Mine is different, please a similar order line and try again.

Not sure yet - as said, it smells like a problem of getaddrinfo which
would be libc6. But first, can you confirm there is no bindaddress
directive anywhere in other conf files? What does:
$ /usr/lib/apt-cacher-ng/acngtool cfgdump | grep --color bind
print?

Eduard.

Ok, I changed the two files accordingly. Install still fails, even if
I reboot.

Sure, this will be unchanged, I just wanted to be sure that it isn't
trying to resolve an interface name. Things start getting ugly now. I
prepared a minimal test case, could you run it? See attachment, just
"g++ addrinfo.cc" to compile, ./a.out to execute.

Eduard.

I tried to locally trace down more, but I guess I'm far beyond my
knowledge.
So far other programms work (ping, ssh, unison, browsers) so it must
be something rather low level.
What I noticed is that (for some yet unkown reason) the local IP is
not assigned currently to enp2s0 (for some reason that is the name of
the interface, not eth0). I can assign it manually with ifconfig but
this does not change behaviour.
I see where your code is coming from, and in deamon.log I see:
Jul 26 15:01:37 samd apt-cacher-ng[21604]: Error resolving address far binding: Bad message
Jul 26 15:01:37 samd apt-cacher-ng[21604]: No socket(s) could be created/prepared. Check the network, check or unset the BindAddress directive.
I did not find out what "Bad message" means and I tried playing with
the directive BindAddress, but I'm not sure I understand what it
actually requires, so in my few attempts did not succeed.
Do you have any further ideas for debugging? Or should I check which
alternatives for acng are available?
Thanks again
Helge

I could start apt-cacher-ng as i deleted /var/log/apt-cacher-ng and
recreated it. Set user and group to apt-cacher-ng
