I'm including a link to a screenshot because copying & pasting doesn't
reproduce what I see on the screen, e.g.

I do not see this behavior with the the previous package 1.15-1+b1. I also do
not see output like this if I change my locale to en_US.UTF-8 or C.

Shortly after the 1.16 release this problem was reported on the upstream
mailinglist:

I will try to add the fixing patch to the next upload (jessie freeze
might not allow it).

sadly the patch results in failing downloads. I removed the patch
(1.16-3) and ugly progress bar is better than failing downloads.
