Source: ltsp
Severity: important
Hi,
i am setting LDM_DIRECTX=True in lts.conf to speedup X. Now i can't start Gnome
or cinnamon. The outher Desktops i try work well (Mate, kde, blackbox, openbox)
If i use:
X -query server :1
or login over ssh and then start session with
gnome-session
or
cinnamon-session
everything works fine.
LDM_DIRECTX=False works too.
I test it with old thin-client (i586, Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400) and a new one
(amd64, Nvidia) with nouveau.

What version of ldm are you running? A newer version just recently
migrated to jessie/testing. I'd also be curious if you have the same
problems running a wheezy system.
Running as fat or thin client?
If you could include the output of "ltsp-info" running on the LTSP
server, that would be helpful. Also, the contents of lts.conf would also
be very useful (/srv/tftp/ltsp/*/lts.conf
/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/*/lts.conf /opt/ltsp/*/etc/lts.conf).

From the thin client itself? how do you run this?
Using X -query should be very similar, though not identical, to how
LDM_DIRECTX=True works...
> everything works fine.
> LDM_DIRECTX=False works too.
This is somewhat surprising; I haven't had the best luck with any of
those desktops using with LDM as a thin client...
Does setting X_SMART_COLOR_DEPTH=false in lts.conf help?

I'll see if i can reproduce the issue myself, though I don't have
similar hardware...

I am testing for a few days/weeks and the error is still there. I update
this morning and do testing again. The version (jessie) of:
ldm-server 2:2.2.15-1
ltsp-server 5.5.4-1
ltsp-client 5.5.4-1
running on a dedicate server AMD64 6 core 16G-Byte.
On the ltsp-server ligthdm is running. I can log in local using gnome,
gnome-classic, cinnamon (3d/2d), mate, kde .......
Running ltsp-wheezy as a dum(x) on Dom0 squeeze:
On wheezy i can use gnome-classic but not gnome, Mate (backports), KDE
plasma and LXDE are running fine. I am playing with totem a video
1920x1080 over Network. No problem.
> Running as fat or thin client?
All testing i do with thin-client! No Fat-client.

I have only a lts.conf in /opt/ltsp/*/etc/lts.conf.
I append the files.

on the server:
ltsp-chroot
passwd (adding password for root, to login on thin-client)
/etc/ligthdm/ligthdm.conf
[XDMCPServer]
enable=true
on the client:
CTRL-ALT-F1 and login as root
adduser test
logout an login as test because root can't start X.
X -query servername/ip :1
choose the session and login.
> This is somewhat surprising; I haven't had the best luck with any of

I started with ltsp on wheezy as dum(x) on a squeezy server about one
year ago. But I had sound-problems (solved after updates) and no
mate-desktop (now in backports). And there was a bug in the DHCP-Server
and DDNS with ip4+ip6. The bug ist solved in jessie (wheezy? I don't
now.). I don't like gnome3. So i stop testing and beginn new tests with
jessie.
In jessie i have sound and mate runs very good. But for other users i
want gnome, cinnamon. Running jessie as dum(x) under squeeze i have to
compile the kernel to change the compressionmethod. But i can't run
neither gnome nor cinnamon per remote. So i begin new test on a dedicate
server.
The next test will be:
-setup ltsp-jessie under dom0-jessie
-setup a new one jessie under dom0-squeeze, because one year ago i
install mate vom mate-desktop.org and I'm not sure to deinstall it right.
The error i report appears on a clean installation!

No, i test it with false an true.

Ok, i have diffrent hardware and can testing for you, but i need help.
Both thin-clients use nvidia. The next test i will do is with my laptop
as thin-client using ati. It may be a X-Server-Error.
Does it help to change the server to i386? I'm using amd64 on the server?
Does it help to change the graficcard from nvidia to ati on thin-client?
I have no time to write software, but i want to help with tests. I have
no problem to patch software or install a testing version.

I test it with my laptop, amd64 dualcore and ati. The same Problem.
Some more Information (same Error?):
Server (the same): CPU amd64, Kernel amd64, debian jessie
Client: CPU amd64, kernel i586, nvidia
(last update 12.11.2014)
set LDM_DIRECTX=True:
gnome and cinnamon don't work
When i start mate-session i can't start totem or evolution. I thing it
is not a problem with mate, but i can't start cinnamon nor gnome. If i
start it from terminal i got this error:
----------------
(totem:30530): Gdk-ERROR **: The program 'totem' received an X Window
System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'GLXBadContext'.
(Details: serial 162 error_code 172 request_code 156 (GLX) minor_code 6)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the GDK_SYNCHRONIZE environment
variable to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
Trace/Breakpoint ausgelöst
----------------
If i start a new X-Server, for example: X -query name-of-server :1 i can
log in via gnome, mate, cinnamon and totem, evolution work fine.
An other way: start mate-terminal on ldm-session with directx and login
in via ssh on the same Server, then i can start totem and evolution too.
I hope it will help.

Hi,
I found that the Error is a glx-mesa error.
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=yes # declaring the varriable is importen!
yes or no doesn't metter!
then totem, glxinfo, glxgears fail. Unsetting the varriable with
unset LIB_ALWAYS_INDIRECT
and everything works fine. xorg.log says: aiglx enabled, but it doesn't
work. GLX over network doesn't work (testet with nouveau, mesa, server
amd64, client i586 and amd64).

Ok, assuming your LTSP environment is /opt/ltsp/i386, looks like you're
being impacted by /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ldm/rc.d/X51-opengl:
# Force indirect rendering when using LDM_DIRECTX so we have some working GL by default
if boolean_is_true "$LDM_DIRECTX" && ! boolean_is_true "$LTSP_FATCLIENT"; then
CLIENT_ENV="$CLIENT_ENV LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true"
fi
You should be able to work around it by creating an empty file in
/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ldm/rc.d/X51-opengl:
mkdir -p /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ldm/rc.d/
touch /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ldm/rc.d/X51-opengl
You might also be adversely impacted by
/opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ltsp/init-ltsp.d/50-opengl:
if boolean_is_true "$LDM_DIRECTX" && ! boolean_is_true "$LTSP_FATCLIENT"; then
# Work around LP bug #1072711
rm -f /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/dri/nouveau_vieux_dri.so
fi
There isnt a simple way of working around that, short of removing the
file, but it might get reinstalled on package updates.
I'll try to get those changed upstream so that you can more easily
disable such hacks.

Ok, I'd like to fix this for for Jessie, since it breaks several common
desktop environments. Simply removing that code fixes several of them:
* gnome-flashback
* cinnamon: still issues a warning about software rendering
* cinnamon2d: still affected by 16-bit color depth issue:
https://bugs.debian.org/705143
Unfortunately, gnome3 doesn't work either way.
I haven't found environments that worked with LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true
but no longer work without it, though that may be hardware specific.
> The error with indirect rendering, is it an error of the mesa-packages
> and which one? Should we send a bugreport?
I don't think setting LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT unconditionally is a good
idea as it is too broad. Individual sites can add it to CLIENT_ENV in
lts.conf if needed.
This is fixed upstream:
https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ltsp-upstream/ltsp/ldm-trunk/revision/1575
commit 659c052510b3aaa48bdcc0ca384c60af1cb2f9b2
Author: Vagrant Cascadian <vagrant@debian.org>
Date: Sun Feb 1 11:58:03 2015 -0800
Remove rc.d hook to set LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true, as it causes
problems with several common desktops, and can be enabled on a
per-client basis by setting CLIENT_ENV in lts.conf.

Architecture: source all
Version: 5.5.4-3
Distribution: unstable
Urgency: medium
Maintainer: LTSP Debian Maintainers <pkg-ltsp-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org>
Changed-By: Vagrant Cascadian <vagrant@debian.org>
Description:
ltsp-client - complete LTSP client environment
ltsp-client-builder - build an LTSP environment in the installer target (udeb)
ltsp-client-core - basic LTSP client environment
ltsp-server - basic LTSP server environment
ltsp-server-standalone - complete LTSP server environment
Closes: 767764 777184
Changes:
ltsp (5.5.4-3) unstable; urgency=medium
.
* Add debian/ltsp-client-core.maintscript to remove obsolete
/etc/init.d/ltsp-client-setup and /etc/default/ltsp-client-setup
leftover from squeeze upgrades (Closes: #777184). Thanks to Andreas
Beckmann!
.
* Apply patch from upstream to no longer remove nouveau_vieux driver on
boot, which is terribly hackish and no longer appropriate with current
versions of LDM (Closes: #767764).
