Subject: xfce4: cannot mount usb drive: "Not authorized to perform operation"
Date: Tue, 2 Sep 2014 15:21:32 +0100
Package: xfce4
Version: 4.10.1
Severity: important
Having recently updated testing, I discover that I can no longer mount
a USB drive by double-clicking on it in the panel. (If this should be
reassigned to xfce4-panel or elsewhere, please do so!) I am running
with a SysV init system, not systemd, so I wonder whether this bug is
similar to that described in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=758557
The error message which pops up says "Failed to mount "drive name" -
Not authorized to perform operation".

Control: reassign -1 systemd-shim

As far as I can tell, this is due to systemd-shim, but it's a bit hard
to debug.
It might be the same thing as
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=757348 or
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=747821 but it's not
completely sure. Any help appreciated.

I am happy to help debug, but I have very little idea how to do so. I
have systemd version 208-8 installed, if that is of any significance,
and systemd-shim version 7-1.

I'm not sure, but note that I've just uploaded systemd-shim 7-3 with a
cherry-picked patch from upstream to fix a race condition, that would allow
systemd-shim to respond to a request before processes had actually been put
in the cgroup. This problem was diagnosed with lightdm on Ubuntu Phone, but
it's quite possible that the same problem is affected xfce.
Could someone please test whether systemd-shim fixes this problem for them?
If it does, great! If not, I'll schedule some time to dig into this bug
further.

I don't have a sysv-rc-core/systemd-shim system at home so I can't
really test until monday. Julian if you could test that'd be nice.
Failing that, I'll try to ping the ranting crowd on the various Xfce bugs.

I doesn't seem to fix the issue, at least for me :

I just tried it. It sadly doesn't fix this problem. It also doesn't
fix the probably-unrelated problem of bug #758557. :-(

Hello Julian!
recently i've faced similar problems, but with local hdd partitons, which
really require authorization to mount.
i'm using lightdm with xfce4.
please make sure that you have all of following packages installed^
gvfs
gvfs-common
gvfs-daemons
gvfs-libs
libpolkit-agent-1-0
libpolkit-backend-1-0
libpolkit-gobject-1-0
libpolkit-qt-1-1
libudisks2-0
policykit-1
policykit-1-gnome
udisks2
libpolkit-agent-1-0 is the one who provides auth dialog window, absence of it leads to "Not authorized to perform operation"
gvfs is required for gtk apps like thunar and, i think, xfce plugins to work
with udisks. kde apps like e.g. krusader don't need gvfs
hope that helps

Hey, can you tell me if adding cgroup_enable=memory to the kernel
command line fixes this problem?
Also, please try out the patch to cgmanager on this message:

These things have solved similar problems for others.

Yes, at least this works for me. It solves 2 things:
1/ System can be shutdown from XFCE shutdown menu
2/ Removable media can be mounted as usual (right-click from desktop)

Actually, those polkit-related issues appearing out of the blue when
systemd is not running as PID1 or the memory cgroup isn't enabled are
caused by #757348, which has been fixed in cgmanager 0.33-2.
Both #757698 and #760281 are simply a byproduct of that cgmanager issue.
#758557 (insufficient permissions for NetworkManager) seems also solved
by cgmanager 0.33-2, so I wonder if all those three issues should be
merged lock, stock and barrel into #757348.
I defer to Steve's decision before issuing (harmful) control statements :-)

Based on the available evidence, yes, I think the first two should be
regarded as duplicates - merging them accordingly.
The third, there is an open question whether the original submitter was
using systemd-shim or systemd.

Responding to this as '[network-manager] network-manager: Not authorized
to control networking' (#758557) - I can confirm that after the
cgmanager permissions screwup was fixed, I can configure and use a VPN
without the polkit policy config hack.

I have installed XFCE as the second DE yesterday and also bumped into

Indeed, the jessie version is frozen so this is not fixed there. With
the sid version it should be fixed. Please do let me know if you have
this issue with 0.35-1.

Well, I'm running sid. It could happen that a version from testing was
installed, but I'm not sure. One more question: is by any chance a
reboot mandatory for this to work? I'd like to avoid that as much as I
can for various reasons.

No a reboot should not be necessary. Just to be clear, could you
describe exactly what symptoms you are seeing, and give the version
numbers of cgmanager and systemd-shim?

I'm not currently at the computer I'm talking about, so I can't give
you precise versions.
I'm normally running wmii and mounting devices using pmount. However,
I decided to install XFCE for another user who's not as tech-savvy as
I am. So I went on with replacing slim by lightdm (I still have
troubles convincing it to still use wmii for my user and XFCE for the
second user only), and then I installed XFCE, console-kit and bunch of
other stuff. Logged into the new user with XFCE, configured things,
noticed clicking on media icons gives an error "policykit not
running". Okay, I thought, give it what it wants. Installed policykit,
systemd-shim and something else, logged out, restarted lightdm just to
be sure. Logging back in, polkit not running, disks don't get mounted.
Okay, let's force-start policykit. Try mounting again, now it says
"udisks not authorised" or something like this. Okay, fsck it all,
removed polkit, systemd-shim and accountsservice and resorted to
pmount as my normal user on request.
And then I see John's post and realise I'm not alone with this issue.
When I get home I may try to reproduce it once again and give you more details.

Andrew

git://github.com/cgmanager/cgmanager should have a complete fix for this
bug. I want to test in several scenarios before pushing a package with
those changes. Anyone who wants to test for themselves can build the
package with the last two patches from the git tree pushed.
After further testing I will release 0.36 upstream and 0.36-1 to sid.
