Hi,
once again syslinux is breaking its reverse dependencies. We're now
getting this in d-i daily builds:
| geniso_hybrid_plus_firmware_partition ./tmp/netboot/mini.iso
| util/geniso_hybrid_plus_firmware_partition: 26: util/geniso_hybrid_plus_firmware_partition: isohybrid: not found

Or that was syslinux-common. I lost track of files/packages getting
renamed/moved around.

Because your package is actively dropping features your reverse
dependencies are using. So please avoid doing so until packages
have been adapted, uploaded, and possibly migrated to testing.
Patches are always appreciated.
About using syslinux-utils in build-depends, I don't know yet.
It'd be nice if someone could take some time to investigate that.
Until that has happened, we're back to: please don't actively
break your reverse dependencies. That's why #759189 belongs to
src:syslinux, and why I reassigned it back.

there were two (suspected) reverse dependencies: debian-cd and
debian-installer. i filled bugs against both beginning of june. turns
out, debian-cd is not using isohybrid. debian-installer is the only
package using it.
> So please avoid doing so until packages

10 weeks should be enough, even for debian-installer, to add a simple
additional build-depends.

patch attached.

no need to overcomplicate things: debian-installer calls the 'isohybrid'
command which is in bin:syslinux-utils instead of bin:isolinux. adding
syslinux-utils to build-depends as you do for any other packages you are
using during the build is enough.

Sure: breaking reverse dependencies is a bug; a quite nasty one when

i do disgree with that interpretation which can be seen in the previous
mail, but insisting on that would not get us anywhere.
now, can you give me a *technical* reason why the bugreport needs to be
kept open? is there a need to keep syslinux out of testing or why does
it need to be kept open?

if you can't give a technical reason why the newer version of syslinux
should be kept out of testing i will close the bug again.

I already did, multiple times. Your disagreeing with how we've been
dealing with disruptive changes in Debian for years isn't an excuse to
break stuff in testing in addition to unstable.
Not sure why keeping the transitional depends until rdeps are updated
was, or is, an issue.
If you close the bug again your package will likely get blocked anyway.

again: debian-installer is the only rdepends there ever was. it had 10
weeks to update, there was more than one ping about it.

thanks
given that:
* the original bug is in debian-installer which needed to be updated
for newer syslinux (and which has happened in git and which progress
of an uploaded can be tracked through it's original bug report at
#751731)
* there's nothing that can be done in the syslinux package regarding
this bug report anyway (i.e. the bug 'goes' away without doing
anything at all in the syslinux package)
* syslinux >= 3:6.03~pre19+dfsg-1 has migrated to testing regardless
* there was repeatedly not given any purpose to what #759189 filed
against syslinux would be good for
i'm reassigning and merging this bug with #751731 again. feel free to
close it if you like to keep only #751731 open though.

* Build cdrom flavour for ARM64.
.
[ Cyril Brulebois ]
* Deal with even more incompatible changes on the syslinux side by
adding a syslinux-utils build-dep (Closes: #751731), no thanks to its
maintainer as far as cooperation is concerned (See: #751724, #759189).
* Bump linux kernel version from 3.14-2 to 3.16-2.
* Drop code snippet meant to ensure every checkout would get an updated
sources.list.udeb (with [trusted=yes]), since that was meant to be
temporary, and that was almost 2 years ago.
* Replace ttf-kannada-fonts-udeb with fonts-knda-udeb.
* Specify -j1 for the submake definition in build/Makefile; that's what
happens anyway, and warnings go away accordingly.
* Add fonts-lohit-guru-udeb to gtk images, fixing rendering for Punjabi
(Closes: #761573).
* Apply patch from Ron and Chris Kuehl to fix lib location and search
path for syslinux >= 5. Some constraints include having ldlinux.c32
in the tftp root, and being able to find some support libraries
thanks to a defined path (Closes: #756275). Many thanks!
* Update translation-status for the release.
.
[ Frederic Bonnard / Aurelien Jarno ]
* Add ppc64el support installing sid (Closes: #754093).
.
[ Steven Chamberlain ]
* On kfreebsd and hurd, which use GRUB for PXE booting, request two
additional modules in the grub-mkimage step: (Closes: #759686)
- tftp: required since GRUB 2.02 otherwise PXE boot will crash/hang
- gfxterm_background: required since GRUB 2.02 for the boot splash
image functionality to be available
- raise the grub-pc (and indirectly grub-common) build dependency to
>= 2.02~beta2~ on these architectures, because module
gfxterm_background did not exist in GRUB 2.00
- raise the xorriso build dependency to >= 1.3.2-1~ on these
architectures, for compatibility with grub-mkrescue in GRUB 2.02
.
[ Joey Hess ]
* Remove desktop selection from syslinux; now available in tasksel.
* remove desktop=xfce preseeding on kfreebsd-* and hurd, since tasksel
3.27 knows about architecture-specific defaults (Closes: #762614).
.
[ Ben Hutchings ]
* Keep Linux modules.builtin file in the initrd.
* Update new-kernel-checklist.txt for the last few years' changes.
