Hi. I just tested Debian Edu based on Jessie, and selected the Thin
Client Server profile, which set up LTSP on a server. But the
installation failed. I used our netinst CD, and the installation
failed with these syslog messages:

Perhaps this is related to the issue reported in

Any clues how to get LTSP installing from d-i in Jessie?

Does your netinst CD contain all the packages necessary to build an LTSP
chroot? Otherwise, you'll need to preseed a network mirror... Though it
looks like you didn't even get far enough for that to be the issue...

This worked for me with a CD built using simple-cdd a few weeks
back. I'll give it another try and see if something has changed- I know
debian-installer has had a new release since then...

I'm wondering if Debian Edu still rearranges the order of boot options?
it might leave the CD in an unmounted state when ltsp-client-builder is
run?

It containt enough for debootstrap /target/, at least.

We have not modified the udeb ordering for many releases, so yeah, the
udeb ordering is still different from the normal Debian
installation. :)

I had a look at the machine when ltsp failed to install, and /cdrom/
was mounted, but nothing under /target/. Should it be mounted inside
/target/ when ltsp-client-builder is running? I thought it would
mount it when it needed it?

<URL: http://ftp.skolelinux.org/cd-edu-testing-nolocal-netinst/ > is
the image I am testing. It is only using packages in testing/jessie.

My test confirmed the same issue (after working around an issue with
lsb_release --codename reporting "n/a").

Well, unless you have all the packages needed on the installer media, or
configure ltsp-client-builder to use network mirrors, it won't work.

Yes, it needs to be mounted in /target/cdrom when ltsp-client-builder
runs. This seems to be a change in debian-installer again, then.

I definitely tested that it wasn't needed back in April, it actually
caused the build to fail to try to mount it.

It would seem ltsp-client-builder is going to need to get much more
intelligent about this...

Right. We will see when we get there. I just do not know if all the
required packages are on the CD yet. :)

Aha.

I hope you can find a good solution for it, as it currently block Debian
Edu Jessie testing of the Think Client Server profile. :)

This is my best try so far, and assumes that /media/cdrom is the

Will this work with PXE installs too? Will USE_CDROM be unset then?
I'll test if you lack the setup for PXE.

Also, the code you propose do not seem correct. First of all, d-i
mounts in /cdrom, not /media/cdrom (while the /target mount in
/media/cdrom, I believe). I notice you commited a different version
which seem to make more sense:

  if [ "$USE_CDROM" != "false" ] && [ ! -f /target/media/cdrom/.disk/info ]; then
    chroot /target mount /media/cdrom
    log "mounting /media/cdrom"
  fi

Why did you use chroot instead of in-target?

It should work as long as you preseed appropriately:

  ltsp-client-builder/use_cdrom=true|false

Yes, it's amazing what testing will do to improve code. :)

> Why did you use chroot instead of in-target?

I had some worry in-target was unmounting the CD, though now I think
what was unmounting it was actually the calls to apt install; so
mounting it later in the process seemed to resolve the issue. I could
test again with in-target if there's a compelling reason to use
in-target...

If I remember correctly, in-target will send output to /var/log/syslog
and perhaps ensure /proc etc is mounted, which might be a minor
advantage. There might also be some locking involved. But if chroot
work, keep it. :)

Closes: 758500 760312 761401
Description:
ltsp-client-builder - build an LTSP environment in the installer target (udeb)
ltsp-client - complete LTSP client environment
ltsp-client-core - basic LTSP client environment
ltsp-server - basic LTSP server environment
ltsp-server-standalone - complete LTSP server environment
Changes:
 ltsp (5.5.3-1) UNRELEASED; urgency=medium
 .
   * New upstream version:
     - ltsp-build-client:
       + Drop ltsp-build-client mount-cdrom plugin.
+ Default to armmp kernel variant for armhf architecture.
+ Rename mount-proc plugin to mount-sys, which allows the mount-proc
common plugin to mount the proc filesystem (Closes: #761401).
Thanks to Petter Reinholdtsen for the report.
 .
     - Remove support for screen scripts (kiosk, xfreerdp, xterm) without
xinitrc, it has been shipped in LTSP for quite some time.
 .
     - Disable listening on tcp in several screen scripts (kiosk, xfreerdp,
xterm). Thanks to Denis Croombs for reporting the issue!
 .
     - xfreerdp screen script: Test for empty arguments to ensure a
       reasonable default.
 .
     - update-kernels: Clarify location of update-kernels.conf in generated
pxelinux files (Closes: #760312). Thanks to Olaf Klein for the report.
 .
     - init-ltsp.d/05-getltsconffile:
+ Allow specifying alternate lts.conf file location with
ltsp.ltsconf= boot prompt option. Thanks to Juan Antonio Martinez
         for the patch! LP: #1339671.
+ Use detect_arch function as a fallback when a filename is not
         specified.
 .
     - Cache variables set by ltsp.* boot prompt options, so that later
       scripts make use of them.
 .
   * ltsp-server/ltsp-server-standalone: Prefer mate-desktop-environment
     over gnome-session.
 .
   * ltsp-client-builder: Mount /media/cdrom in the target if not already
     mounted (Closes: #758500).
