Subject: RFP: syncthing -- decentralized file synchronization tool
Date: Fri, 30 May 2014 14:26:33 +0200
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name    : syncthing
  Version         : 0.8.12
  Upstream Author : Jakob Borg <jakob@nym.se>
* URL             : http://syncthing.net/
* License         : MIT
  Programming Lang: Go
  Description : decentralized file synchronization tool

Syncthing replaces Dropbox and BitTorrent Sync with something open, trustworthy and decentralized. Your data is your data alone and you deserve to choose where it is stored, if it is shared with some third party and how it's transmitted over the Internet.

Using syncthing, that control is returned to you

 * Private. None of your data is ever stored anywhere else than on your computers. There is no central server that might be compromised, legally or illegally.
 * Encrypted. All communication is secured using TLS. The encryption used includes perfect forward secrecy to prevent any eavesdropper from ever gaining access to your data.
 * Authenticated. Every node is identified by a strong cryptographic certificate. Only nodes you have explicitly allowed can connect to your cluster
 * Web GUI. Configure and monitor Syncthing via a responsive and powerful interface accessible via your browser.
 * Portable. Works on Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris. Run it on your desktop computers and synchronize them with your server for backup.
 * Simple. Syncthing doesn't need IP addresses or advanced configuration: it just works, over LAN and over the Internet. Every machine is identified by an ID. Just give your ID to you friends, share a folder and watch: uPnP will do if you don't want to port forward or you don't know how.
 * Powerful. Synchronize as many folders as you need with different people.

I made a provisional packaging of syncthing, it's at
http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/collab-maint/syncthing.git/

It is in a state where it works for me. The motivation for the
packaging was getting syncthing to compile in platforms which are not
supported by golang, which it does, as long as one has gccgo-go
installed (see #765841). Builds with golang-go also work.

What is left to do is to make a real copyright check, try to fix the
many lintian warnings and errors, and find a sponsor to upload it to
the archive. I probably will not do these in the near future, so help
with the package would be appreciated.

Pulse is a fork, not a renaming.

Dependencies are going to be fun, too:
https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing/blob/master/Godeps/Godeps.json
(since there are a few).

It's worth noting that at least "github.com/calmh/osext" is a fork (no
idea if more of them are). The only addition I can see on the fork is
Solaris support, which has since been added upstream, so I think it's
likely worth trying to get syncthing to switch to using upstream
directly there.

I'm sorry. I god stuck on trying to make the package uphold the DFSG
(minified javascrips), and real life got in the way of finishing the
package. I will change the bug to RFP. What little spare time I have is
better spent improving the packages I allready maintain. If nobody
continues the work I might pick it up again later.

I had a go at packaging the current version of syncthing (0.12.22), and
have an approximately working package.

I've built the package and dependencies in a xenial PPA [1], but
hopefully there should be minimal delta to unstable. Packaging is in git
(gbp with pristine-tar) [2].

At least the following new dependencies are needed:

 * angular-translate.js
 * golang-github-bkaradzic-go-lz4
 * golang-github-calmh-du
 * golang-github-calmh-luhn
 * golang-github-calmh-xdr
 * golang-github-thejerf-suture
 * golang-github-vitrun-qart

Most of these are at least simple libraries with no further dependencies
which dh-make-golang handled with minimal fuss.

This build patches out most of the vendored javascript/css and uses
system copies. The resulting interface seems to work, although since the
versions aren't exact matches there might be subtle regressions.

However, while I'm quite keen on seeing this built in debian (I'm
currently using upstream's deb packages), introducing and maintaining
all these packages is probably a certain amount of work, so I'm a bit
dubious about taking this on alone (especially since I don't have a huge
amount of experience with golang yet). Any takers?

Did you talk to the golang team about it? Maybe those libraries could be
group-maintained...

Hello,

I am a member of the Golang Packaging team and I would be willing to
package all of the Go dependencies.

If I do that. Would you move foward with the packaging? I am impatient
to see Syncthing in Debian as I consider that this is a very important
project.

An equivalent for BitTorrent Sync is listed in the FSF high priority
project list:
 - https://www.fsf.org/campaigns/priority-projects/

Debian should do its part, take action and distribute such a tool to our
users as soon as possible.

Cheers,

Humm, I am doing exactly that. As you can see, submit@bugs.debian.org

I just put the bug in CC so that the owner knows I am taking action.

You should file a separate ITP ("reportbug wnpp"), and link it to the
syncthing ITP as a blocking bug.

Stephen

Ah, I see, sorry — in that case the ideal thing to do is to put the
synthing ITP in X-Debbugs-Cc instead, so it gets copied on the result of
the bug submission (with the new ITP bug number).

I can look into it again later. For now my schedule is too busy, at
least until the end of May. If the bug is still open by the time I
finish all of my exams I'll pick it up again.

Alright,

Since there is no owner yet, I will take ownership of the bug as I will
have a good amount of time in the next few days to work on it. I can
probably get this done in a matter of a few weeks.

Help is always welcome!

Hello Alexandre

I appear to have failed to subscribe to this bug so I missed your
messages. Apologies. Fixed now.

My private packaging repo for syncthing (currently at 0.13.0~beta.4)
should probably be moved to debian git. I'm not sure if it makes more
sense for it to be in pkg-go or collab-maint.

The clone URL for my gitlist instance seems to be broken, but a tarball
of the packaging repository can be found at [1].

The main outstanding question is to what extent the package can get away
with vendored copies of javascript vs packaging. Upstream includes
un-minified libraries, most of which don't precisely match versions
available as libjs-* or are yet unpackaged.

As of syncthing 0.13.0~beta.4
angular 1.2.9 (libjs-angularjs 1.5.3)
angular-dirPagination (unversioned, not in repos)
angular-translate 2.9.0 (not in repos, I made a somewhat messy package
of it)
bootstrap 3.3.5 (libjs-bootstrap 3.3.6)
font-awesome 4.5.0 (fonts-font-awesome 4.6.1)
jquery 2.2.2 (libjs-jquery 1.12)

Anyway, hopefully we can move this forward - thanks for getting the
various go libraries uploaded.

I have already created a repository in the pkg-go team. I intend to
maintain Syncthing under this umbrella. I have started the packaging
from scratch there.

I'll copying some things over from your packaging, but I am almost done
already.

I just have to clear up some legal stuff like missing licenses and I'll
be ready for an upload.

I intend vendor all JS that isn't in Debian. That is jquery and angular
stuff. Fontawesome and bootstrap Debian versions are fine.

I'll most likely upload Syncthing to Debian this Sunday.

Thanks,

Good news. Is there anything I can do to help beyond what you can get
from my previous packaging efforts?

Thank you for offering but there is nothing to do.

All there is to do for now is wait for some dependencies to be ACCEPTed
from NEW.

I'll be uploading Syncthing no later than 24 hours after those
dependencies make it to the archive.

Cheers,

I may have missed a part of the discussion, but it would be great if the
source package be available somewhere for people to review or use in
case you disappear (which i've seen happen way too often in ITPs :)

Yes, it has been accepted in unstable:

https://packages.qa.debian.org/s/syncthing/news/20160627T200040Z.html

Two uploads to NEW, only the first had the "Closes: #749887" and hence
wasn't parsed:

It's in the archive (see https://tracker.debian.org/syncthing for
details). I'm guessing the appropriate "-v" option wasn't used on the
second build which landed in NEW (0.13.4+dfsg1-1 — this bug was closed
in 0.13.2+dfsg1-1).

I'm closing the bug now. Thanks Alexandre for packaging this!
