Package: scim
Version: 1.4.14-6

This is a forward of the Ubuntu bug https://launchpad.net/bugs/1315579

When using an IM via scim with the GNOME text editor gedit, the
backspace and delete keys do not work properly. This problem makes scim
effectively useless together with gedit.

See full description of issue, along with attached illustration here:
https://launchpad.net/bugs/1315579

I am also experiencing this issue with scim in gedit. I've been using
scim extensively in gedit since 2007, and this has never been a problem
in the past. The first time I've noted this is with gedit 3.10.4. The
gedit version I was using up to now was somewhat earlier however, so I
cannot say for certain exactly with which version the problem was
introduced. Also, it may well be that the problem was introduced via a
change in scim rather than with gedit. This indeed seems likely, for the
following reasons:

1) m17n package works fine in gedit when used through ibus or Fcitx. So
it is specifically scim that is unable to utilize m17n properly in gedit.

2) The very same problem with scim and defective functionality of
backspace and delete keys, is found when typing in Nemo file browser.
For example if one is renaming a file in Nemo using scim, then the
backspace and delete keys are dysfunctional.

Hi,

I can confirm that it is scim's bug (actually, scim gtk-immodule's bug).
The bug came from the migration of scim-bridge,
I tried to fix it once but I didn't figure it out at that time.
I will try to fix it if my time is available...

By the way, there is a workaround for this bug. Since the bug is in
scim's gtk-immodule, use XIM should work fine.

  $ env GTK_IM_MODULE="xim" gedit

It works fine here.

Thanks,
Tz-Huan

Hi Tz-Huan,
Thanks so much for writing in. I wasn't sure what to do with the
terminal command you have given:

$ env GTK_IM_MODULE="xim" gedit

I tried pasting it into a terminal window and restarting scim, logging
out and back in-- but there was no change. The delete and backspace keys
remain dysfunctional. If you could give a little more instruction as to
what to do, that would be great :-)

Also: If you are able to fit the time in to fix the bug, there are many
of us who will be extremely grateful!

Thanks,
Swarup

Right. It does not change the GTK_IM_MODULE variable persistently, so if
you re-login it's all reset. But if you simply start gedit with that
command and start typing, it should work.

One way to make the workaround persistent on an Ubuntu system (don't
know about Debian) is to put a wrapper in the ~/bin folder:

$ cat ~/bin/gedit
#!/bin/sh
export GTK_IM_MODULE=xim
exec /usr/bin/gedit "$@"

and make the file executable with

chmod +x ~/bin/gedit

Then, however gedit is started, the GTK_IM_MODULE will be 'xim' in the
gedit process instead of 'scim', and the backspace and delete keys will
work as expected.

I just tested this, and it works-- for about one to two minutes. That is
to say, the backspace and delete keys work; that was very exciting to
see! And everything else also works fine, as I say for one to two
minutes. Then gedit starts to lock up. There is a delay between hitting
a key and having it appear on the screen, and that delay quickly becomes
very prolonged. Then the scim typing system itself starts to not work,
giving results on the screen that differ in what seem to be erratic or
random ways from what was typed. And then the laptop fan starts to speed
up to a very high pitch, gedit freezes and has to be closed. After
closing gedit, the laptop fan immediately comes back to normal.

I tried opening gedit this way twice, and the same thing happened both
times-- this makes me think the workaround is not going to be functional.

From this I have the impression that to get a workable solution, the
bug in scim is going to need to be fixed.

Just to make sure it is clear: I only tested the command "env
GTK_IM_MODULE="xim" gedit". When it gave the results described above,
then I did not attempt to make the workaround persistent using the
subsequent instructions.

Sorry to hear that. I for one can't reproduce the problem you describe,
but I'm able to type those beautiful characters - and delete them with
the backspace or delete key - without gedit starting to behave strange
or freezing.

Ok, it shouldn't be any different.

Actually I was able to reproduce the problem. When I tried again, and
typed rapidly using scim, the computer seemed to be overloaded somehow,
and there were long delays between key presses and appearance on screen.

Yes, it looked exciting-- but unfortunately the workaround isn't
functional. What it looks like we'll need is a fix for the bug.
