Package: libimobiledevice-utils
Version: 1.1.6+dfsg-1
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
I work under the gnome-shell environment, with systemd, network-manager,
and every recommended package for this (batteries included).
When plugging my iphone 3GS (under iOS 5, if I am not mistaken; definitely not
iOS 7), I get the following log trace:
avril 25 13:32:15 fiona kernel: iphone-set-info[2893]: segfault at 0 ip 00007ff2caa94ada sp 00007fff700cd438 error 4 in libc-2.18.so[7ff2caa13000+1a0000]

(various plug/unplug).
When launching in the console, ideviceinfo (and most other utilities) segfault;

I did. The results are below.
Remark that I have to plug twice the device before getting something
other than "No device found, is it plugged in?". It may not be new. It
may also be because when inserting the device, the udev machinery tries
to use some exec that segfaults (same as ideviceinfo).

Hmmm, there's some debug output I'd like to see. Could you run
"ideviceinfo --debug" reproducing the error?
You can start it in gdb like this: gdb --args ideviceinfo --debug

Browsing the various issues on the github branch, I saw :
https://github.com/libimobiledevice/libimobiledevice/issues/66
and
https://github.com/libimobiledevice/libimobiledevice/issues/68
They both seem related. And it looks like they all point to segfaults
when not using usbmudx version 1.0.9.
Following on that, I read this:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=746634
I have no time today to test with an updated usbmuxd, but after reading
these reports, I'm pretty sure a dependency is in order. I'll follow up
with info as soon as I got enough time to try.
Sincerely,

Using the git tree of usbmuxd as of today (but there were no changes in
the last 20 days), and recompiling usbmuxd (that was a bit of an effort,
especially as the latest version is not tagged), I now have a splendid
(old) iphone working perfectly as a relay for internet. The files are
mounted, and I thing ios7 even works for this one.
My patch to debian/control relative the one in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=746634
(which also enables autoreconf ; this may be a bit more invasive than
what you are comfortable with) is short:

Please, consider making an official release of 1.0.9, for the benefits
of the pour souls that inherited an iPhone as only way to connect to the

I'm waiting for a 1.0.9 release from upstream. Try bugging them instead.

BTW, the log from https://github.com/libimobiledevice/usbmuxd.git
contains the following entry:
commit eca4b3cb833a306677a76d4645e2e034f77fc387
Author: Martin Szulecki <m.szulecki@libimobiledevice.org>
Date: Thu Sep 19 20:46:30 2013 +0200
Bump version to 1.0.9
I am not sure why there is no tag nor release associated to that commit.
In addition the build system is based on automake, unlike the source of
the usbmuxd package, which uses cmake. Am I missing something here?
Cheers,

Does libusbmuxd-1.0.9 look like usbmuxd-1.0.9 to you? It sure doesn't to me. The
release will happen in due time. Just wait for it and stop bothering this bug

Assuming the problem is fixed with usbmuxd 1.0.9, it may be worth
forwarding the bug report in terms of how they handle the response
from usbmuxd_read_buid().
Both userpref_read_system_buid and pair_record_generate assume that
usbmuxd_read_buid() will return a valid string and do no checking of
the return value.
userpref_read_system_buid will try to debug_info the returned
string, which would likely crash ... but it's a moot point since as
far as I can tell libimobiledevice is building with STRIP_DEBUG_CODE.
I'm happy to submit a patch, or alternately a bug report directly to
the libimobiledevice folks, or a separate bug here ... but figured
I'd check here first to see your preference.

I am encountering the same poblem.
The system has usbmuxd 1.0.8-5 and libusbmuxd2:am 1.0.9-1.
@Chow Loong Jin I read your coment abuout the usbmuxd package bu I am
not sure I understood it, sorry for bothering again.
Am I correct that we are aiting until pstream releases usbmuxd 1.0.9 to
package it and that it is this release which is supposed tosolve the
problem?
Thanks!

I just uploaded a usbmuxd snapshot, seeing that upstream hasn't done anything to
usbmuxd for a couple of months. I understand a release is coming soon.

On that basis, I'm gong to assume that this is fixed in the snapshot. If
it's still reproducible, please re-open with more details.
