PROBLEM:
after issuing
$sudo apt-get update i see the last strings:

W: Failed to fetch
xz:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/ftp.us.debian.org_debian_dists_jessie_main_binary-amd64_Packages
Hash Sum mismatch
E: Some index files failed to download. They ...

Changing mirrors does not help, tried about 10+ different.

This was a bug in the uncompression of xz files (indicated by the
message talking about 'xz:', other bugs/mirror problems/… have a
similar message but usually trigger earlier/on other files).

It is fixed in 1.0 and given that this version is also in testing now an
upgrade will fix it (and I therefore also close the bug).

The bug manifests itself only with certain files, so you might as well
be lucky enough that it works this time. If not, do the update by
forcing the use of gzip in favor of xz:
apt-get update -o Acquire::CompressionTypes::Order::=gz

This should complete successfully then and you can upgrade apt (and
libapt-pkg which actually includes the bug) to its 16th birthday release.
