Message #5 received at submit@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
Package: mcelog
Version: 1.0~pre3-72-gcbd4da4-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
Hi.
It seems that when the CPU is unsupported, the package
fails to install/upgrade:
Setting up mcelog (100-1) ...
/run/udev or .udevdb or .udev presence implies active udev. Aborting MAKEDEV invocation.
insserv: warning: current stop runlevel(s) (empty) of script `mcelog' overrides LSB defaults (0 1 6).
Starting Machine Check Exceptions decoder: CPU is unsupported
invoke-rc.d: initscript mcelog, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing package mcelog (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
mcelog
Cheers,
Chris.

I've added a note to the package description mentioning which CPUs are
supported. I'll gladly apply a patch allowing the package to install on
unsupported CPUs without the error described here.

Sorry, but I don't think this is an adequate way to solve this bug
(therefore re-opening until a proper solution has been found)...
I mean there is of course no guarantee that programs from a package for
arch XYZ that has been installed on arch XYZ can actually be used...
e.g. qemu-kvm might not be used if VT technology in the CPU is
missing...
But I think, that the package itself must install... not sure if this is
really strictly mandated by the Debian policy,.. but I guess it's what
everyone expect.

Isn't it as simple as to change the postinst to ignore any failure of
invoke-rc.d mcelog start ?
i.e. replacing the line
invoke-rc.d mcelog start || exit $?
with
invoke-rc.d mcelog start
Cheers,
Chris.

I've just tested a patch and uploaded it to the corresponding Launchpad bug,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+source/mcelog/+bug/1279293 .
No, I don't think it's as simple as ignoring the failure in postinst.
For one thing, that part of the postinst is generated automatically
by debhelper. For another, if mcelog won't work as a trigger or daemon
there is no point in the init script trying to start it at system boot
time either.
