I can't see good reasons why a sleep after an umount should be rquired.
With the assumption that the umount command only exits once the file
system is cleanly unmounted.

Message #22 received at 734794@bugs.debian.org (full text, mbox, reply):
I can confirm that kpartx needs "sleep 2" /after/ adding or removing
partitions before running some other command that assumes the partitions
are now gone (or in place). My guess is that something needs to
propagate and kpartx could either wait for that change to happen before
quitting or not, and the current code does not.
If this bug report is about sleeping needed after unmount before kpartx:
no idea. However, the mentioned
umount "[..]/etc/resolv.conf"
looks odd to me, since I suppose that to be a file, not a mount point.
Best, Sebastian

When you add/remove *partitions*, yes. That's understood.

Can you please elaborate on this?
What would be the right course of action, so we don't have to hardcode
"sleep 2"? Is there any command that would wait until kpartx is ready?
Or that would tell us whether it's safe now or not to use kpartx?
Cheers,
Patrick

It is a timing problem. And the timing can greatly vary based on the
amount of task your machine is performing at that time.
Given the current limitations, the wise option I thought was to make
kpartx try a little longer. For this, I've submitted a patch upstream
increasing kpartx's retry from 3 seconds to 5 seconds. Why 5 seconds ? I
have no logical reasoning.
If it gets accepted upstream, it will show up in the next release.
Meanwhile, if you want to test it, you can pick the patch from the
upstream mailing list and try.

Does upstream know about this issue?
What would be the real fix to solve this timing problem?
Are there commands, such as:
- 'kpartx --wait-until-ready' that waits as long as required or,
- 'kpartx --is-ready' that exits 0 or 1 accordingly.
Or would implementing those up to 'kpartx' or another project?
Cheers,
Patrick
