Hello,

"funguloids" depends on OGRE v1.8, which is discontinued and
unsupported after 1.9.0 was released, and so it should not be present
in future releases of Debian.

Please upload at your convenience, but obviously the sooner the
better once your upstreams support the new version of OGRE, to squash
most bugs well before the freeze.

I uploaded OGRE 1.9.0, released by upstream almost a month ago, and
by now it has compiled successfully in most architectures -- except
for the ones which have GCC 4.8 as default compiler.

Release Managers decided that GCC 4.6 and 4.7 should be removed (at
least not be the defaults versions of the compiler) from releasable
architectures [1].

The transition of boost-defaults to 1.54 (or some newer version, if
maintainers bump it) might affect your package as well.

Cheers.

"Finally, the gcc maintainers intend to remove gcc-4.6 and gcc-4.7
from Jessie, so architectures using either version as their default
compiler cannot be considered as release architectures."

Hi,

OGRE 1.9 is in unstable and testing and apparently without major
problems for 3 months. In principle, I would like to ship only 1.9
for Jessie, and not 1.8. I don't think that they will make more
releases for 1.8, so it means that it's already out of support from
upstream.

The freeze will happen just over 6 months from now, so there's still
plenty of time and no immediate rush; but it would be nice to have
things stablilised and ogre-1.8 removed well before that.

So it would be great if you could start compiling your packages
against ogre-1.9, if supported by the respective upstreams.

Cheers.

Hi,

I'm the Fedora package maintainer of funguloids. While still hoping that someone had already ported funguloids to 1.9, google found this bug,
but alas no patch was available.

So I've written a patch myself. Which I've attached to this mail to avoid you guys doing double work.

Regards,

Hans

I raised the severity to "important", because I plan to ship Jessie
with ogre-1.9 only.

As said in the original but report, ogre-1.8 is not supported by
upstream by now (almost a year), and it is already showing problems
(like not building in the new architectures being added), so it will
be quite a burden to support it in a Debian stable cycle when it's an
unsupported version before the freeze, and having to do things
duplicated for 1.8 and 1.9.

Cheers.

Paul, I have the vague recollection that you became upstream of this
package, is that right?

What do you think of upstreaming this change, or at least use it in a
new debian revision, to migrate to OGRE 1.9? As explained in the bug
report, I would like to get rid of the long discontinued 1.8 ASAP, if
possible before the upcoming stable Jessie.

Cheers.

Technically yes, in practice I haven't had time to get funguloids to a
point where I'm comfortable putting out a new release. If you would like
to join upstream I would be happy to add you. I wanted to complete the
following before making a new upstream release.

      * Drop the mpak format and use a directory structure, I have a WIP
        local branch for this.
      * Drop them embedded code copy of SimpleIni and switch to
Ogre::ConfigFile, I have a WIP local branch for this.
      * Check if any of the bugs/wishlists/support issues are easy to
fix and still apply, fix them.

In light of the upstream status documented above, I would suggest to add
the patch switching to OGRE 1.9 to upstream git, add it to Debian and
upload a new Debian revision.

Unfortunately I cannot commit to yet another project, I already want
to get rid of some of the current burden because I stopped being
effective in several fronts lately...

I added you explicitly in CC because I didn't know whether you were
receiving these bug reports (the primary maintainer is Debian Games
Team), and if you planned to do something about this bug report.
Nobody else in the games team seems to step forward to do this.

Just to be explicit, are you willing to do it (the second option, just
a new revision) for Jessie? Or you don't plan to upload new revisions
for the time being?

I don't know if it's too late already to get the changes accepted for
Jessie, but I think that 3 weeks is enough time if the upload is done
now-ish.

Fair enough.

I'm not subscribed to pkg-games-devel as it is too much mail.

I am willing to do that and will do it today.

I calculated that barring other problems, being unstable this week or
next week is enough for packages to reach jessie before the freeze.

Working on this but getting a link error. This a bug in OGRE or Boost?

Thanks for the upload. You must have figured out the error, but for
the record I guess that it was missing "-lboost_system" somewhere when
compiling.

Cheers.

Correct, added a workaround for the issue in debian/rules.

Personally I think the correct place to fix it is boost or maybe ogre.

I believe that boost::thread needs system since 1.54 or so. Does
funguloids use boost::thread directly?

Correct, although based on some searching it was 1.50.

> Does funguloids use boost::thread directly?

funguloids uses OGRE only and it doesn't even use any of the OGRE
thread-related headers. The OGRE includes use boost::thread but not
boost::system. None of the OGRE pkg-config files tell packages using it
that they need to link with -lboost_system or other parts of boost.

OK, I'll investigate that, thanks!
