Hi there,

By mistake I ended up trying to package atop instead of apachetop
which is orphaned. The package can be found at:

https://mentors.debian.net/package/atop

I am not sure if it will be useful to anyone. Didn't have a lot
challenges with packaging it but then I am new to this whole thing so
may be missing something that I am not aware of.

regards

Mark

Please have the apachetop package that is wrongly named atop on
mentors.debian.net removed and re-upload with the correct name. I am
concerned that someone will accidentally upload the atop-named
apachetop as atop which will wreck havok with the atop package.

Greetings
Marc

Subject: atop 2.0.2 packaging: anything I can help with?
Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2014 17:02:28 +0200
Hello!

I am very interested to have atop 2.0.2 in Jessie. At least the atop part,
packaging netatop as dkms would be lovely, but well, I never did that.

Is there anything I can help with?

I did some basic packaging work (fio, fsmark and not yet in Debian filebench and
our own tool distkeys to distribute SSH keys).

Thanks,
Martin

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Hi there,

I have made package for version 2.0.2, and uploaded to mentors:

  http://mentors.debian.net/package/atop

Made two commits on top of Vcs-Git:

  * Import upstream 2.0.2 code

https://github.com/StephenPCG/debian-atop/commit/527db3149be62b097b7edcf702ae32825aa0eb50
  * refresh patches to fit new code, remove manpage-syntax patch (applied
upstream)

https://github.com/StephenPCG/debian-atop/commit/bc0b6f499a8c947bf45062572191d9656d033a7d

Is there anyone who can sponsor me?

BTW:

* It seems the upstream released a newer version 2.1 just a few days ago,
if anyone requires it, I can also make package for it.
* Someone asked to package netatop, I will have a look into this.

Hope this helps.

Cheng, after coordinating with Marc, the maintainer, I made a 2.1 package
already, but I am not completely satisfied since I had strange merge conflicts
on git-import-orig of the 2.1 archive in top of the 2.0.2 work Marc already
did. I contacted Marc about it, but didn't yet get a reply.

I have it on github at the moment:

https://github.com/teamix/atop-debian

So I am planning to redo this from scratch and import 2.1 directly on top of
the latest git alioth version 1.2.7-something today.

So I branched the current situation into martin-first-try and will redo from
scratch today.

I strongly suggest we use 2.1.

I also suggest we get rid of quite some more of the lintian warnings. atop 2.1
should already have manpage spelling fixes as I forwarded them to Gerlof, the
upstream author of atop.

Marc, do you have any comments on how to proceed? On any way, I do have time
today, and thus I will do the work mentioned now.

Ciao,
Martin

Okay, I got a clean 2.1 git-import-orig on

https://github.com/teamix/atop-debian/

now. So from 1.27 version the git-import-orig worked without issues…

I will now redo patches and other fixes I Marc and I made for the 2.0.2 and
previous 2.1 attempt and work from there.

I hope I have a workable package in a hour or so… well probably after midday
break.

Ciao,
Martin

Okay, this works now and is much cleaner than my previous attempt. Marc I
redid your changes.

I will do more changes and lintian fixes, try to fix up atopacctd not being
started and look into systemd stuff after midday break.

All on github in master branch.

Okay, I am a lot further. I made a first attempt at debianizing the atopacct
initscript.

I also fixed the init script of atop not to add daily.log and atop_somedate.log
as arguments, producing a syntax error. For now I use the atop_somedate thing
as atopsar expects it.

Here is a (probably incomplete) list of issues TODOs I still have:

=== how to deal with incompatible atop log file format on upgrades? ===

atop doesn't start:

+ start-stop-daemon --start --background --quiet --pidfile /var/run/atop.pid --
make-pidfile --startas /usr/share/atop/atop.wrapper -- /usr/bin/atop -a -w
/var/log/atop/atop_20140915 600
+ case "$?" in
+ '[' no '!=' no ']'
+ exit 0
mango:[…]# /usr/bin/atop -a -w /var/log/atop/atop_20140915 600
existing file /var/log/atop/atop_20140915 has incompatible header
(created by version 2.0 - current version 2.1)

atopsar does not like it either:

mango:[…]# atopsar
raw file /var/log/atop/atop_20140915 has incompatible format
(created by version 2.0 - current version 2.1)
trying to activate atopsar-2.0....
activation of atopsar-2.0 failed!

This probably needs a debconf to ask to remove the old ones?

Well after a day it issue should not happen by default anymore, but still.

=== systemd integration ===
service files, then I probably could also undo the exit 0 fix in atopacct file
for the case its running, systemd doesn't like that.

=== Review ===
And I also need a review of the atopacct init script, reload is not
implemented yet, and this is my first init script hacking in ages. start, stop,
status, force-reload appear to work and is lintian clean, but I don't like
that it doesn't work with pid file at the moment. atopacctd double forks itself
away from any session:

254 /*
255 ** daemonize this process
256 ** i.e. be sure that the daemon is no session leader (any more)
257 ** and get rid of a possible bad context that might have been
258 ** inherited from ancestors
259 */
260 if ( fork() ) // implicitly switch to background
261 exit(0); // continue in child process
262
263 setsid(); // become session leader to lose
ctty
264
265 if ( fork() ) // continue in child process
266                 exit(0);                // --> no session leader, no ctty

=== Extra goodie ===
packages for netatop and netatop-dkms :)

Won't promise on that tough. Cheng, interested?

Done for today I think.

Package is quite lintian happy already:

lintian -IE atop_2.1-1_amd64.changes
I: atop source: debian-watch-contains-dh_make-template
I: atop: hyphen-used-as-minus-sign usr/share/man/man1/atop.1.gz:1238

Ciao,

I have done my atop work for this week. So in case you want to review it:

https://github.com/teamix/atop-debian

(commit 8029812ac83d70e5d5865a9f20227243c162b8e9)

http://people.teamix.net/~ms/debian/sid/
http://people.teamix.net/~ms/debian/sid/atop_2.1-1_amd64.changes

I think its in quite good shape already.

I found that sometimes atopacctd process accounting does not seem to work and
reported this upstream with Gerlof.

Will not be in office till next monday.

Done.

Except for handling acct (debian package) doing ps account as well, like in
init script.

The latest atop version is needed for compatibility
with the optional netatop module. Older versions (i.e. 1.2x)
check for kernel patches, which have long since been removed.

Hi Dominique!

Not the latest. Any version since 2.0 will do.

And if you look at the github.com address I actually started work at packaging
2.1.

I didn´t tell anyone much about it as I did not finish it yet – wanted to talk
with Marc on Debconf, but didn´t come around to it. Currently the build
package does not contain a binary of atop as the upstream author changed the
make file. "make install" does not install a binary file, instead one has to
decide between sysv init or systemd install. There is a genericinstall target
that doesn´t install any sysv or systemd configuration file which I intend to
use instead, cause I think I want to install my own versions of systemd and
sysv stuff. Of course I would also update packaging to latest 2.2.

I did not talk with Marc, the maintainer of atop, yet. And I do have holidays.

I currently have no intention to work on this before January 15th. And as any
"is needed" does not automatically make it happen when it comes to Debian
packaging work, I´d suggest feel free to offer help if you want to see faster
progress. Otherwise it is rather easy to compile both atop and netatop for

As told before (I think), my last work on this is on

https://github.com/teamix/atop-debian

Its atop 2.1, but the package doesn´t produce a binary yet, cause make install
does not work anymore and needs to be replaced with either an make install
target for systemd or sysvinit (don´t remember the exact target names) or
"make genericinstall". I intended to do the later as I currently the package
provides both a service file and an init script. And I intended to use them
and not the upstream versions.

Feel free to use any of this work I have up at github.com. I think I didn´t
push any of this to alioth yet due to its preliminary state. I could have used
a different branch, but I didn´t.

I am currently still in holidays but intended to work on this after I am back
at work. In case you have something to test I am willing to look at it during
holidays as well.

Thanks,

No need, 2.2.3-1 is in final testing. Unfortunately, 2.2.3 does not
restart cleanly, so the first upload is going to go to experimental
(tomorrow, if the midnight cronjob doesn't bomb on me again). I
have pestered upstream lately with quite a few mails, so I'm going to
wait for him to react before upload goes to unstable.

Greetings
Marc

As far as the restart failure is concerned, I have noticed
it as well. Atop won't start after reboot if the atop file
for the current day exists. The 'daily.log' or 'atop.log' (Fedora)
indicates 'existing file has incompatible header'.

I will file a separate bug for that and look into it. Thanks again
for the packaging.

Thank you.

Process accounting does not seem to work. I wonder why tough.

atopacct is running, and it also seemed to setup process accounting:

merkaba:/run> ls -l pacct_*
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Aug 11 10:53 pacct_source

pacct_shadow.d:
insgesamt 4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Aug 11 10:53 0000000000.paf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7 Aug 11 10:53 current
merkaba:/run>

merkaba:~> ls -l /proc/3748/fd
insgesamt 0
lr-x------ 1 root root 64 Aug 11 10:57 0 -> /run/pacct_source
l-wx------ 1 root root 64 Aug 11 10:57 1 -> /run/pacct_shadow.d/0000000000.paf
l-wx------ 1 root root 64 Aug 11 10:57 3 -> /run/pacct_shadow.d/current
lrwx------ 1 root root 64 Aug 11 10:57 4 -> socket:[814532]
lrwx------ 1 root root 64 Aug 11 10:57 5 -> socket:[814533]

Yet the file that is supposed to contain the data, I think thats
"0000000000.paf" does not grow.

The service runs:

merkaba:~> systemctl status atopacct | cat
● atopacct.service - Atop process accounting daemon
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/atopacct.service; enabled; vendor
preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Do 2016-08-11 10:53:19 CEST; 1min 50s ago

Aug 11 10:53:19 merkaba systemd[1]: Started Atop process accounting daemon.
Aug 11 10:53:19 merkaba atopacctd[3748]: reactivate process accounting

I wonder about

Aug 11 10:53:19 merkaba systemd[1]: atopacct.service: PID file /run/
atopacctd.pid not readable (yet?) after start: No such file or directory

but the process is definately running and the process file also exists and
contains correct value

merkaba:~> cat /run/atopacctd.pid
3748

I can report in another bug, but since this is experimental and for
preliminary testing for now I just added it here.

Thanks,

I guess that systemd wants to see the pid file before it is written by
the process.

Please report a bug. This will make it easier to communicate with
upstream.
