Package: pytrainer
Version: 1.10.1-2
Severity: normal
As of today, pytrainer no longer imports gpx files generated by OSM Tracker. (I last tried a couple of weeks back, it always used to work flawlessly.)
Here is what I see on the console:

Hi,
Pytrainer tries to validate every xml document before import and
unfortunately xml 1.0 is not supported. Some questions trying to find
root cause:
1.- Does gpx file validate?
$ xmllint --noout --schema <schema_involved> <gpx_file>
2.- Did you Johannes change some packages on your local installation
in last weeks?
3.- Are you aware of any changes of mentioned app (OSM Tracker)?. I
know few people who got invalid exports from Garmin Connect some days

Best regards,
David
PS: sorry for top posting, not really familiar with Debian's bug tracking system

Here is what happens:
[..]
2013-10-26_14-05-38.gpx:25889: element speed: Schemas validity error :
Element '{http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1}speed': This element is not
expected. Expected is ( ##other{http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1}* ).
2013-10-26_14-05-38.gpx:25896: element speed: Schemas validity error :
Element '{http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1}speed': This element is not
expected. Expected is ( ##other{http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1}* ).
2013-10-26_14-05-38.gpx fails to validate
jr@Erwin:~/ownCloud/osmtracker$
Obviously, the offending part is the "speed" element. Here is there
corresponding code in the xml file:
<trkpt lat="52.39175298" lon="13.13240081">
<ele>79.4000015258789</ele>
<time>2013-10-26T12:05:50Z</time>
<extensions>
<speed>1.25</speed>
</extensions>
</trkpt>
Is this an incorrect whay of recording the speed?
Here is the header of the GPX file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<gpx xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1" version="1.1"
creator="OSMTracker for Android™ -
http://osmtracker-android.googlecode.com/"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation
="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1
http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/gpx.xsd ">

I am using Debian Testing, so the system keeps changing all the time.

According to the changelog at
https://code.google.com/p/osmtracker-android/wiki/Changelog
v0.6.5: Export speed information in GPX thanks to andyhelp.
Is this "extensions" element something that could be accommodated by
pytrainer, or is it invalid xml?
Thanks,
Johannes

please note a similar bug report at

Obviously, the OSM Tracker dev holds that the speed extension is legit
and should be supported.

It seems that despite valid xml format (syntax), gpx file does not
valid provided schemas.
According to 1.1 gpx schema, you can add extend GPX by adding your own
elements from another schema in "extensions" (see
http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/1/#type_extensionsType), but we miss
the definition of the element provided. For example, pytrainer adds
heartrate data using this feature:
<trkpt lat="43.5407522" lon="-5.6508772">
<ele>14.4000000</ele>
<time>2013-07-17T07:53:19Z</time>
<extensions>
<gpxdata:hr>101</gpxdata:hr>
</extensions>
</trkpt>

No worries, it was just to discard other root sources, but I think we
have already found it.

Although I am not an expert, I still think is a good idea to validate
data upfront and from my point of view the issue is on the OSMTracker
guys who should provide a valid gpx file.

Hi,
I'm not sure if I should open a separate bug report, but GPX files
created from my GPS (igotu) via igotu2pgx fail to import, as they are
XML 1.0. I feel this is related as it is similarly pytrainer failing to
import GPX files from other sources.
I tried hand-modifying the file so it would be accepted, but couldn't
hit on the appropriate formula for making this work. Unfortunately this
is a show-stopper bug for using pytrainer.
To be useful, IMHO pytrainer needs to be more forgiving in attempting to
do its best to interpret files, as there is no guarantee that the GPX
files coming from physical devices are going to be valid. User's have
little control over how files are formatted.
Workarounds would be good too!
Thanks.

Hi there,
I believe this bug was fixed by this commit[1] submitted to the
upstream repository. As far as I know it was caused by the last upgrade
to perl 5.22 occurred on Debian testing.
[1]https://github.com/pytrainer/pytrainer/commit/fcc8f3361d4ff25559cb87a375fbbfc1192ca334
I've made some tests and updates on the pytrainer package that is
available at git repository from pkg-running team and uploaded the
final version to my personal git repository[2].
[2]https://git.msantana.eng.br/pytrainer.git
I would be grateful if someone could review the changes that I made.

Hello Marcelo,
Roughly looking at the changes, I'm OK with all of them, including the
packaging QA.
Thanks a lot for your work, which seems great.
I could of course merge everything in the packaging git repo (assuming
that I remember the correct git-fu incantations)....but I'd prefer
more atomic changes.
Indeed, what would help me would be:
1) cut the packaging QA commit
(6c0f66469f49feff4a7e43bce502d6672e3ec1e9) in on commit per each
individual change so that I can apply the patches individually and
have a better git log in the main repository
2) instead of applying the upstream changes in master, build a tarball
with upstream git snapshot so that I could use git-import-orig and
then use an upstream version name such as "1.10.2~git20160104"
I can of course do both 1) and 2) but I don't really know when...:-)
Giving you commit access to the packaging git repository is certainly
something I'd be happy to do if you're OK with this. I'd then just
need the name of your Alioth account if you already have one.
Thanks again for your interest in this packaging work.

Here you go : your alioth account can now push to the git
repository....
And now's your challenge (the one I'm kinda failing to): keep enough
time to do Debian work and not use all your free time for running..:-)
