Subject: linux-image-3.10-3-kirkwood: please build with CONFIG_MARVELL_PHY=m

Package: linux-image-3.10-3-kirkwood
Version: 3.10.11-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I hope I am filing this in the right place, if not, please reassign
accordingly.

I want to enable Wake On Lan on my qnap TS-119P II. In order to do this,
the kernel needs to use code that is specific to the marvell PHY,
m88e1318_get_wol and m88e1318_set_wol from drivers/net/phy/marvell.c to
be specific. This code can be built as a module when the
CONFIG_MARVELL_PHY option is set to “m”.

Therefore, could you please set CONFIG_MARVELL_PHY=m for the kirkwood
kernel builds?

Thanks a lot!

Martin, I see that you disabled CONFIG_MARVELL_PHY in
http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/kernel?view=revision&revision=14178
four years ago.

Is that still relevant at all? If so, what options do we have here?
Could the users of affected devices blacklist the module on their
machines? Could the kernel driver be fixed upstream to not be active on
devices that will be broken?

Thanks.

Unfortunately I cannot remember (and I cannot even read the commit
messages right now because Alioth is done). IIRC I disabled it based
on a recommendation from Lennert Buytenhek. Lennert, do you remember?

Then I propose to do the following:

Please set CONFIG_MARVELL_PHY=m for the kirkwood kernel builds. In case
anyone notices any breakage, let’s figure out a way to deal with it,
even if that way ends up just being a better comment on the disabled
build option :).

Thanks.

No objection from me (although it might be a good idea to ask the
upstream Kirkwood/Orion folks first).

How can we contact them? Is there an email address? Also, who can
actually make the change to the kernel config? Do you have the commit
bit (I realize alioth is still down, but I’m curious nevertheless).

I'd email:

Thomas Petazzoni <thomas.petazzoni@free-electrons.com>
Andrew Lunn <andrew@lunn.ch>
Jason Cooper <jason@lakedaemon.net>

Ian Campbell and Arnaud Patard can make the change.

The problem here was that the Marvell PHY driver at some point supported
one or two specific Marvell ethernet PHY models, and people then started
blindly adding new PHY IDs to it without checking whether the already
supported PHYs and the PHYs for which support was being added had common
register layouts (and they didn't).

The result is that on some of the very common Marvell PHYs that this
driver claims to support, the driver does sequences of register writes
that have entirely different effects than the intended ones, causing
various unintended side effects, including complete link failure, and
e.g. on the quad ethernet PHY on some of the mv78xx0 development
boards, having the Marvell PHY driver enabled causes link to flap on
the other three ports if you plug/unplug one of the ports because the
driver thinks it's a good idea to hard reset the whole chip under
these circumstances...

What needs to be done is that someone with access to the relevant
Marvell datasheets fix the driver to behave according to which chip
it's being used on. It's quite a bit of work to sort out this mess,
easily several tens of hours -- I started looking into it when I was
still at Marvell, but didn't get it done before leaving.

Thanks for clarifying. This sounds like it would not be a wise choice to
enable this option again :-(.

Does anyone have an idea about what we can do to make the marvell module
available to those who need it, without breaking the rest? Maybe offer
it in a separate package?

I'm in two minds about this.

The issues have been described in general terms but we don't have any
specifics for the platforms supported by Debian. Are any of those known
specifically to be broken?

Realistically I expect the only way this is going to get fixed in
practice is if we enable this option and deal with any resulting bug
reports either by fixing/disabling that phy driver or by forwarding
upstream.

A bunch of the phy ids seem to be duplicated in several phy drivers.
Looking at MARVELL_PHY_ID_* I find:
        $ git grep -iE 0x01410\(c60\|c90\|cc0\|e10\|cb0\|cd0\|e50\|e30\|e90\|e40\|dd0\)

Should we be disabling some seleciton of these, or do PHYID's not mean
what I think?

Yes, the DB-78xx0-BP development boards.

The number of ports is the last-but-one digit in the PHY model number so
we could remove everything with a 4 there.

Most network drivers do not use phylib and the fact that they recognise
and configure the same Marvell PHYs directly does not mean anything.

Which is only
include/linux/marvell_phy.h:#define MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1116R             0x01410e40
I think. According to my grep at least...

The model number, not the ID. So:

MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1145
MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1149R
MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1240

(assuming the PHY IDs and masks are correct for those models).

FWIW I built a kernel based on svn r20728 (from before alioth went away)
with the following patch and booted it on a dreamplug and a QNAP TS-419
(both kirkwood).

In both cases marvell.ko was loaded and the network appeared fine. I'm
not sure how to tell if marvell.ko is actually active though -- neither
ethtool nor dmesg contain any indication.

But then, I don't think either of these platforms was ever affected by
the original issue so I don't think this really proves very much...

Ian.

I just went looking for some of these datasheets and it seems they are
not publicly available.

So for now what I am going to do is to enable CONFIG_MARVELL_PHY but
disable the 4 port options, specifically, the following will be enabled:
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1101
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1112
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1111
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1118
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1121R
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1318S
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1116R
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1510
While these will be disabled:
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1240
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1145
      * MARVELL_PHY_ID_88E1149R

I'll also send mail to netdev...

Subject: Incompatible phys driven by Marvell phy driver?
Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2013 11:06:04 +0000
Hi,

In Debian bug #723177[0] Lennert Buytenhek reports[1] that the Marvell
phy driver tries to driver some Marvell phys which have differing
register layouts:

I've tried to look into this but apparently most of the data sheets are
not publicly available, so I cannot even determine which phy's are being
driven incorrectly, let alone propose a fix. From my PoV it would be
sufficient to remove the incorrect PHYs from the phy table until they
are fixed properly.

I've CCd a bunch of people who have touched the driver, especially those
adding new Phys in the last couple of years. Do any of you have
sufficient access to datasheets to at least identify which PHYs might be
driven incorrectly?

Thanks,
Ian.

Hi Ian,

Please mind this bug is currently not assigned to an existing package
(you can see this at the top of the bugreport page, where it says
"Maintainer for linux-image-3.10-3-kirwood is (unknown)".

Because of this it won't show on bug page of current Linux images and
messages to the bug report don't reach the linux-image-* Maintainers.
You might want to reassign it to an existing package or to src:linux.

Kind regards,
Andrei
