Subject: RFP: fonts-arkpandora -- Replacement fonts for Microsoft's Arial, Times, and Verdana fonts
Date: Tue, 06 Aug 2013 15:26:21 +0200
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name    : fonts-arkpandora
  Version : 2.04
  Upstream Author : Gavin Graham
* URL             : http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/gavindi (not working)
		    http://ostatic.com/arkpandorafonts/
* License : Same as Bitstream Vera
Description : Replacement fonts for Microsoft's Arial, Times, and Verdana fonts

The Arkpandora MS-TTF Replacement Font Pack is designed for screens and
printing and as a drop-in replacement for Arial, Times New
Roman and Verdana. It includes Aerial, Aerial Mono, Tymes, and Veranda.

---

A software that I'm currently packaging embeds a copy of those fonts and
it would be nice if I could point to a separate package providing those
fonts.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Why not use fonts-liberation which serves the same purpose?

Added to my TODO list, but don't we already have other fonts that
claim to be Times New Roman/Arial drop-in replacements (maybe not
Verdana, though)? Anyway, packaging is probably easy, as usual.

Just had a quick discussion with Christian over IRC, so sharing just
thoughts it looks like upstream is dead? I had to download the archive
using wayback machine (archive.org). Is it really required to maintain a
font whose upstream is not active?

Btw I've package almost ready only needs fixing the copyright file if
its needed I will push it to pkg-fonts repo and Christian or you can
upload it.

Warm Regards

Just in case we consider uploading the package, I've pushed the package
to repo at arkpandora.git under pkg-fonts git repository.

I digged deeper and those fonts are not strictly required for my package.

That said they are the default fonts used by the upstream software that
I'm packaging and it would be nice if we could use the same fonts as
upstream.

I saw that upstream disappeared from the web but the tarball can still be
grabbed in many places (including Gentoo). I have no opinion on whether
it's a big problem in the case of fonts. They rarely change after all.

Cheers,

Yeah I used the wayback machine to get the archived version of webpage
and downloaded the fonts and its packaged and is at [1]

Only thing I've doubt here is I assigned GPL-3+ license to Debian
folder and not sure if its fine. If not I will change the license to
something more permissible and hopefully Christian can upload it.
