Python module which provides a generator version of os.listdir() that also exposes the extra file information the operating system returns when you iterate a directory.
scandir also provides a much faster version of os.walk(), because it can use the extra file information exposed by the scandir() function.

Ben Hoyt (author of scandir) here: note that my scandir module isn't quite
ready for prime-time. It's usable, but still very much in early
development. It has a couple of known issues, and I also intend to complete
the fast C version. Not quite sure about a time-frame yet.

The new package won't reach Debian stable until at least 2 years, so I
don't think this is a problem.
In the mean time, the speed improvement brought by your module can be
useful in some workflows, like the one I have to deal with currently at
work.
So I thought it was a good idea to propose a scandir package in Debian
(and it could bring you more feedback).

Though, I will add a note about the "work-in-progress" status in the
package description.
And if mentors think that the package should only be in experimental
for now, that's fine with me too.

Cheers,
Nicolas

Hi,

A long time ago, you expressed interest in packaging scandir. Unfortunately,
it seems that it did not happen. In Debian, we try not to keep ITP bugs open
for a too long time, as it might cause other prospective maintainers to
refrain from packaging the software.

This is an automatic email to change the status of scandir back from ITP
(Intent to Package) to RFP (Request for Package), because this bug hasn't seen
any activity during the last 12 months.

If you are still interested in packaging scandir, please send a mail to
<control@bugs.debian.org> with:

 retitle 711388 ITP: scandir -- Better directory iterator that returns all file info the OS provides

 thanks

It is also a good idea to document your progress on this ITP from time to
time, by mailing <711388@bugs.debian.org>. If you need guidance on how to
package this software, please reply to this email, and/or contact the
debian-mentors@lists.debian.org mailing list.

Thank you for your interest in Debian,

Control: retitle -1 ITP: scandir -- Better directory iterator that
returns all file info the OS provides

I would like to package python-scandir, as newer versions of
python-pathlib2 now depend on it.

As I don't want to add new deps to the python-pathlib2 package now, I'll
work in several steps :
- close this ITP bug by packaging scandir ;
- leave things as-is until stretch is out ;
- get newer python-pathlib2 out with a depend on python-scandir (thus
closing #851137).

For reference, that is a backport of the scandir in Python 3 ; I know
it's a wishlist item to stop packaging Python 2 modules, but since it's
a new dep of an existing one, I think it still makes sense.

Snark on #debian-python

Scandir is pretty generic. I'd suggest python-scandir or similar for the package name.
