* Package name    : pxe-pdhcp
  Version         : 0.1
  Upstream Author : FURUHASHI Sadayuki <fr _at_ syuki.skr.jp>
* URL             : http://svn.coderepos.org/share/lang/c/pxe-pdhcp/
* License         : MIT
  Programming Lang: C
  Description : ProxyDHCP server for the non-DHCP server host

 Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) is a specification to boot PCs via the
 network connection.
 .
 There are 3 ways to set up the PXE.
  * Only with DHCP using the DHCPOFFER containing the PXE extension.
    --> dhcpd running with special DHCPOFFER in dhcpd.conf .
  * Run the ProxyDHCP server on the same server as the DHCP server.
    --> pxe + dhcpd running on the same server.
  * Run the ProxyDHCP server on a server different from the DHCP server.
    --> pxe-pdhcp (no dhcpd should be installed together)
 .
 This pxe-pdhcp package provides the support to the last option and this
 option is the most useful for people on the consumer grade home network
 since DHCP server can be left untouched which is impossible with other two
 options.
 .
 For BOOTP or DHCP needed for acquiring an IP address, it should be served
 from a different server than the one running this pxe-pdhcp.
 .
 For TFTP needed for transferring files, such as tftpd-hpa (or atftpd), it
 can be run on any server.
 .
 This program is a single purpose package and simpler to configure than the
 multi-feature dnsmasq package for the ProxyDHCP.
---------------

The upstream source is old (2007) and not active. But there are patches on the web.
The folllowing updates are made to fit for Debian.

  * string boundary patch. (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/flalin/about)
  * etherboot + syslog patch. (daydream.trippers@gmail.co)
  * add pid file generation patch. (osamu)
  * Add Debian lsb init script. (osamu)
  * Cleaned source tree to make this as new upstream tar.

I will make new URL for updated source as alioth git repo.

Just in case you were not aware of it... the package dnsmasq already
provides the ProxyDHCP feature.

I wonder if pxe-pdhcp has some features that dnsmasq doesn't.
dnsmasq does have a nice feature: it's supported and actively developed
:-)

Yes.

The pxe-pdhcp is like a nullmailer and it is not like exim, postfix nor
courier-mta in the way it works.

dnsmasq is designed to provide DNS and optionally, DHCP. So its focus
is DNS. ProxyDHCP only setting is a special configuration of its use.

This pxe-pdhcp is like nullmailer ... just install it and let it do a
single thing, proxyDHCP. No special configuration needed.

Osamu

Hi,

I think it is better not to upload this to archive. Closing this ITS.
