Subject: missing CIFS support on install
Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2013 06:04:50 -0700 (PDT)
Package: n/a
Version: n/a

When installing i.e.
debian-live-6.0.6-i386-gnome-desktop.iso
debian-live-6.0.6-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso
etc...

/live/initrd.img does not include CIFS support
CIFS is very handy when PXE booting Debian live from Windows OSs as Serva does it here.
http://vercot.com/~serva/an/NonWindowsPXE3.html

Serva solves the problem by loading a complementary initrd containing/installing:

des_generic.ko
md4.ko
cifs.ko
mount.cif

these files are all originally taken from the corresponding filesystem.squashfs

Serva also patches /script/live adding support for the command line variable "ipby",i.e. ipby=dhcp, ipby=bootp, solving some problems with some DHCP servers

I hope you guys can add CIFS support on future Debian install systems then Windows users will not need complementary initrd files when PXE booting Debian.

Please let me know if I wasn't clear enough on my description.

Best,
Patrick

the iso images do not necessarily contain cifs, that depends on the
package selection defined by tasksel.

if your intention is to pxe boot a live system, just use the netboot
flavour which is exactely made for that purpose and does include,
amongst others, cifs. see live-manual on how to use and setup pxe
with/for debian-live.

I think you didn't understand my bug.
1) the presence or not of cifs support on initrd does not depend on tasksel
2) why should I download an special PXE distribution when I can do exactly the same with the regular Live distribution.
3) you haven't consider the DHCP client needs on boot a parameter defining BOOTP or DHCP

why don't you guys fix this and you get Debian at the same level as Redhat, Fedora, Susee, Ubuntu, Mint etc...

Just an idea to makes things simpler...

Best,
Patrick

maybe you can again what you actual use case is, with less words, and
more precise?

can you elaborate?

i don't understand why you need cifs in the iso images' initrd in order
to boot that iso image over pxe, can you explain?

> 3) you haven't consider the DHCP client needs on boot a parameter defining BOOTP or DHCP

that sentence doesn't make sense to me, can you rephrase?
